Note: While I am interested in balance and style concerns related to both 3.0 and 3.5, these spells are primarily written for use in a 3.0 campaign.

Animate Chain
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Target: One Chain weighing up to 1 pound + 1 pound/3 levels
As Animate Rope except as noted, a normal chain is 5’ long per pound. In order to entangle a creature the chain must be at of a length based on the table below. A chain has a 5’ range increment normally, which expands to a 10’ increment after being animated.
Additionally, a chain may either lengthen up to 1 ft/caster level, or it may add one link to attach it to something such as a ring on the floor, or another chain. The latter command may be repeated for both ends of a chain on successive rounds. Likewise, the caster may command a single link of the chain to separate each round. (This can be combined so one could, if one had reason to do so, first detach a link and later reattach it.) A person attempting to climb an animated chain with the consent of the caster may treat it as a knotted rope.

Table AC-1

Creature Size Chain Length
Small or Smaller 5’
Medium 10’
Large 15’
Huge 30’
Gargantuan 60’
Colossal 120’
Colossal+ 240’

Arzeth’s Gripping Chain, Lesser
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft/level)
Target: One unattended or in-hand chain weighing up to 1 lb. + 1 lb/3 levels, and creature
Duration: 1 round/level
Saving Throw: No
Spell Resistance: No
Sometimes called Arzeth’s Grasping Chain this spell is the result of a revenge fantasy by Arzeth when he was an apprentice, revised downward to be a spell within his capabilities at the time.
The target chain is considered an animated object (as per the MM) which is of a size based on table AC-1. The chain has a BAB of CL/2 (max +5) and a strength equal to the caster’s prime spellcasting stat (int for wizards, cha for sorcerors) and a will save equal to the caster’s. The chain’s face and reach are based on the ‘tall’ configuration, and it is a reach weapon (so it’s reach is 5’ longer than normal). The chain immediately attacks the target creature (charging if the target is more than 10’) if in range, or runs towards the target otherwise, and attempts to intiate a grapple. In addition to normal grapple actions, the target may attempt to break the chain at its normal break DC as a standard action. The chain never deals any damage to a target, and this spell has no effect on magical or attended chains.
Focus: The chain to be animated.

(As the name of the second spell indicates, there are more spells to come, but I figured I'd start with these) Animate Chain was designed with Animate Rope in mind, and Arzeth's Gripping Chain was variously compared to Hold Person 3.0 (although, it doesn't necessarily compare badly with Hold 3.5, either), and Evard's Black Tentacles, as some benchmarks to get you started.

Note: A chain usually has hardness 10, is 5' long per pound, and costs 30 gp per 5', although this spell was also balanced with the idea that the caster might order a specially-crafted mithral chain as a focus.

Comments, suggestions, all welcome!
