1) If I have an unseen servant go next to someone and place a portable hole within a bag of holding, will that person be sent to the Astral Plane, no save?

2) Can I cast Shrink Item on some sort of Gargantuan object, then cast Animate Object on it and be able to blow it up again at any time? If so, how would that interact with the size limit/caster level on the animate object spell?

3) Can I have a ring gate with me inside of a Prismatic Sphere or Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, and have an Unseen Servant outside the sphere holding the other Ring Gate so that i can cast spells effectively through the sphere?

4) If I am standing 300 feat away from someone, and I say the command word to a Mirror of Mental Prowess and face it towards them, will they automatically look into it, assuming that they are looking at me?

5) When activating Daern's Instant Fortress, that is a standard action, but do I then need another standard action to open the door?

6) When the Iron Bands of Bilarro say that they hold someone immobile, does that still allow for casting spells with only a verbal component?

7) Is it possible to cast a Wall of /Fire/Prismatic horizontally, then cast Reverse Gravity and force someone to fall into it? Or, barring that, Fly above them, cast a Prismatic Sphere, then cast Reverse Graviy?

8) When Greater Invisibility says that it doesn't end when you attack, does that mean that it won't end with casting an offensive spell? Any spell?

9) Is it possible to craft an Incense of Meditation for arcane casters?

10)Can a deaf bard cast?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) depends, does the effect normally do that? the outcome tends to be direct and world affecting, dragging things into it, etc. read the portable hole and bag descriptions to find out.

2) I think animate requires concentration, but yes you could in theory. the moment you go outside your spell limits, however, the animate spell goes null and void.

(helps if I answer the rest too eh? >.< one moment)

1) Yes
2) Don't know
3) What's a ring gate?
4) If they can see clearly at that range. I would give 'em a reflex save to shut their eyes.
5) I think so. DMs discretion
6) Unless it says they can't talk, yes
7) I'm not sure you can cast the spells horizontally. If you can, then yes
8) Yes
9) If you can talk your DM into it
10) With a spell failure chance

ahem, continuing along...

3)if the ring gates truly work in that fashion, sure. but I don't think you can have two gates working like that on the same plane. It requires planar traveling. I could be wrong though. Be aware that with the gate open, if there's a line of sight, spells can come back through TO YOU!

4) they have to clearly see the mirror, if that's not possible, it won't work. Even if it involves the mirror seeing them and not the other way around, they would have to appear clearly in the mirror. a speck won't work.

5) instant fortresses aren't concentrate required I believe, so you can open that door (you can open just about any door really, but if you want to avoid a rude rhetorical joke...). might want to elaborate on the question if it's more complicated than that.

6) yes, unless you put a band on their mouth.

7)Walls spells usually need a surface to attach to, otherwise most rules of gravity play in effect. (walls of fire technically could be done upside down if that's what you're meaning, but DM discretion really). Yes you could use reverse gravity to somehow impale them if you can manage it. that's physics, not mechanics.

8)Find the spot talking about direct attacks, if that applies, then yes. (essentially, yes).

9) Maybe, DM discretion really.

10) Can a mute bard sing? yes, but very badly. Ditto to a deaf bard (there's a miscast penalty to deaf casters).

1) If I have an unseen servant go next to someone and place a portable hole within a bag of holding, will that person be sent to the Astral Plane, no save? If you want to waste two nice magical items...sure it can work.

2) Can I cast Shrink Item on some sort of Gargantuan object, then cast Animate Object on it and be able to blow it up again at any time? If so, how would that interact with the size limit/caster level on the animate object spell? Not until you are of a very high epic level... even a 20th level caster can only shrink an object with a volume of 40 cubic feat... (roughly 3X3X4.5 feet in size.) If you somehow did so, I would rule that animate object spell eould fail once its target was no longer valid due to size... but that is just me... I have don't know how it would be handled officialy (although I suspect that the Sage would handle it the same way).

3) Can I have a ring gate with me inside of a Prismatic Sphere or Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, and have an Unseen Servant outside the sphere holding the other Ring Gate so that i can cast spells effectively through the sphere? No, line of effect desn't extend through magical portals that I know of.

4) If I am standing 300 feat away from someone, and I say the command word to a Mirror of Mental Prowess and face it towards them, will they automatically look into it, assuming that they are looking at me?I would allow them a reflex save to aviod looking at the mirror.

5) When activating Daern's Instant Fortress, that is a standard action, but do I then need another standard action to open the door?Opening a door is normaly move-equivelnt action... I would probably make the opening the door on a DIF a move equivelent action as well.

6) When the Iron Bands of Bilarro say that they hold someone immobile, does that still allow for casting spells with only a verbal component?Yes

7) Is it possible to cast a Wall of /Fire/Prismatic horizontally, then cast Reverse Gravity and force someone to fall into it? Or, barring that, Fly above them, cast a Prismatic Sphere, then cast Reverse Graviy? prismatic wall says a vertical wall, so no it can't be cast horizantaly, Wall of fire on the other hand doesn't mention any sort of oreintation, although the inplaction (from the statement that the wall is 20 ft. "high") would be that it is vertical as well... still there is enough wiggle room to cast it horizantaly with out breaking the letter of the rules. Prismatic spehere appears around you, and blocks line of efect, so you could not cast prismatic sphere and then a reverse gravity that would affect creatures under you, unless you left the sphere first.

8) When Greater Invisibility says that it doesn't end when you attack, does that mean that it won't end with casting an offensive spell? Any spell?correct, it will only end when the duration expires or it gets somehow dispelled.

9) Is it possible to craft an Incense of Meditation for arcane casters?that would be a DM call.

10)Can a deaf bard cast?Of course they can, but since all bard spells have a verbal component a deaf bard would suffer a 20% chance of spell failure whenever he cast a spell.

hope that helps :)

I won't repeat answers that have already been answered .. but I will post some corrections ...

3) Can I have a ring gate with me inside of a Prismatic Sphere or Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, and have an Unseen Servant outside the sphere holding the other Ring Gate so that i can cast spells effectively through the sphere?

from the SRD:

Ring Gates: These always come in pairs—two iron rings, each about 18 inches in diameter. The rings must be on the same plane of existence and within 100 miles of each other to function. Whatever is put through one ring comes out the other, and up to 100 pounds of material can be transferred each day. (Objects only partially pushed through and then retracted do not count.) This useful device allows for instantaneous transport of items or messages, and even attacks. A character can reach through to grab things near the other ring, or even stab a weapon through if so desired. Alternatively, a character could stick his head through to look around. A spellcaster could even cast a spell through a ring gate. A Small character can make a DC 13 Escape Artist check to slip through. Creatures of Tiny, Diminutive, or Fine size can pass through easily. Each ring has a “entry side” and an “exit side,” both marked with appropriate symbols.
Strong conjuration; CL 17th; Craft Wondrous Item, gate; Price 40,000 gp;Weight 1 lb. each.

Yes, it works just fine ... the item is designed to allow spells to be cast through them.

4) If I am standing 300 feat away from someone, and I say the command word to a Mirror of Mental Prowess and face it towards them, will they automatically look into it, assuming that they are looking at me?

There is no requirement on this item that the target be looking into the mirror ... which ability are you specifically trying to activate??

AFAIK - they'd all trigger as long as you were 25 ft from the mirror and gave the proper command words .. and the target is reflected in the mirror ...
(the target being reflected in the mirror is different than the target looking at the mirror ...)

11) Can i cast Anti-gravity field on someone while time-stopped?

Oh, and for the shrink item, i only intend to animate an item normally within my capabilities. I just then want to know if it is possible to put it in my pocket.

You cast Anti-Gravity on an area, not a person, so the answer in yes.

I fire one arrow at an ork outside the field.
what bonus do i get from the arrows?

1) Bag of Holding/Portable Hole do not state no save. I would give someone not holding them a savingthrow. Note, usually I see this tactic used as a way to ESCAPE danger, not an attack

2) Yes you can animate a shrunken object. When it got big, if it exceeded your size, the spell ends.

3) Yes you can use a ring gate to pass through magical spheres and other walls that. Remember to use the LOE rules, and that anyone you attack will automatically have LOE back to you as well.

4) No. At the very least, they get a saving throw. I woudl give bonuses based on distances, and 300 ft would probably be +30.

5) No. The door opens instantly, it is not a standard action.

6) Held immobile means they use somatic components.

7) No. Walls can not be made horizontal unless it specifies that they can. You can do the reverse gracity, trick with a Prismatic Sphere, but they get a saving throw to throw themselves out of the way horizontally, missing the Sphere, but continuing to fly up.

8) Correct, Greater Invisibility does not end no matter what spell you cast.

9) No, Incencse of Meditation only applies to Clerics. You might be able to design a similar item for Wizards, but I personally would raise the price.

10) Yes a Deaf Bard can cast - but he has the standard penalties for being Deaf. 20% spell failure chance - until he becomes accostemed to it then no chance of spell failure.

on the whole shrink item, animate item trick

<snip>An animated object can be of any nonmagical material.

and

You are able to shrink one nonmagical item (if it is within the size limit)<snip>

so, if you have an object you'd like to shrink, say a table, you can do so...assuming it's within the size restriction and not magical.

once you cast that spell on it, though, it becomes a magical object (at least for the duration of the spell)

that makes it an invalid target for Animate Objects IMO...

if you were to go the other way around, ie, animate the table, THEN shrink it, it would also fail, as that table is now an "animated object" (type:construct and therefore magical)

just curious, why would you need to animate something that small? or animate something you can carry around as a bookmark?

Of course they can, but since all bard spells have a verbal component a deaf bard would suffer a 20% chance of spell failure whenever he cast a spell.
Except glibness. Of course, you may have a bit of trouble gaining any benefit from it while deaf, but you can cast it without a problem.
Zherog

Even glibness has a verbal for Bards. From the SRD (under the Bard class):

Every bard spell has a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music).

4) If I am standing 300 feat away from someone, and I say the command word to a Mirror of Mental Prowess and face it towards them, will they automatically look into it, assuming that they are looking at me?Why? The description (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/MagicItemsV.rtf) of the abilities for a Mirror of Mental Prowess do not seem to require a target to look into it.

For a mirror that this might apply to (i.e. Mirror of Opposition), I would likely require the target to make a spot roll at long distances (good vision could be bad), and (most importantly) the angle of the mirror must be correct for them to see their own reflection (pretty darn tough at 300').
Beamup

03-31-05, 02:24 PM
Even glibness has a verbal for Bards. From the SRD (under the Bard class):
And from the SRD under the glibness description,

Glibness
Transmutation
Level: Brd 3
Components: S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 10 min./level (D)
Following the standard rules for precedence, the specific spell entry for glibness overrides the general rules for Bard spells in the class entry. Glibness therefore has no verbal component by RAW.
Seeker95

03-31-05, 02:39 PM
Zherog and Beamup: we are now at a paradox / conundrum / point of irony.

Yes, all bards have Verbal components.
Yes, this bard spell does not list a verbal component.
Yes, you are both correct.

Glibness "Your speech becomes fluent and more believable."
So while it may be argued that the spell has no verbal component, this spell indeed does have a verbal component in that with no words, casting the spell has no effect! In this case, the verbal component is the focus of the spell! :D

Bad idea with the range granting a penalty .. and besides, nothing in the magic item description even suggests a saving throw ....

so sorry, no save.

Did you read the item? It also does NOT say that everyone automatically gets a reflection in it. The problem is the item leaves it up to the DM.

As a DM, I would have to say that the chances of a person being reflected in a mirror at 300 ft away are pretty SMALL. This is not a curved mirror that reflects everyone around, it only reflects a small, narrow area.

Mirror of Mental Prowess: This mirror resembles an ordinary looking glass 5 feet tall by 2 feet wide. The possessor who knows the proper commands can cause it to perform as follows.

Read the thoughts of any creature reflected therein, as long as the owner is within 25 feet of the mirror, even if those thoughts are in an unknown language.

View other places as if with clairvoyance, but vision extends even onto other planes if the viewer is sufficiently familiar with them.

Use it as a portal to visit other places. The user first views the place with the clairvoyance function, then steps through the mirror to the place pictured. Others can follow her through the mirror if they like. An invisible portal remains on the other side where she arrives, and she can return through that portal. Once she returns, the portal closes. The portal closes on its own after 24 hours (trapping the user if she’s still in the other place), and the user can also close it with a command word. Creatures with Intelligence of 12 or higher might notice the portal just as they might notice a magical sensor from a scrying spell. Any creature who steps through the portal appears in front of the mirror.

Once per week the mirror accurately answers one short question regarding a creature whose image is shown on its surface (giving answers similar to those from the legend lore spell).

Strong conjuration and divination; CL 17th; Craft Wondrous Item, detect thoughts, clairaudience/clairvoyance, gate, legend lore; Price 175,000 gp; Weight 40 lb.

I would say that the best way to get someone's reflection in the mirror is to use the "clairvoyance power.

This would have no save, but take an extra action.

Failing that, just hoping that someone 300 ft away will have their reflection in your 5ft x 2ft mirror is stupid.

If you don't want to use the clairvoyance, and don't like a saving throw, maybe a touch attack, range of 100 ft, would be fair.

But only a moronic DM is going to claim that a flat, 5ft x 2ft mirror has the refelection of everyone withing 300 ft .

As a DM, I would have to say that the chances of a person being reflected in a mirror at 300 ft away are pretty SMALL. This is not a curved mirror that reflects everyone around, it only reflects a small, narrow area.Depending on how the user positions himself, he should be able to see the reflection of most anything in a wide area in front of the mirror.

As for someone seeing their own reflection, that is a very narrow area (but does not appear to be a requirement for a Mirror of Mental prowess).

Sorry guys, I had intended to say Mirror of Opposition. It just came out wrong :embarrass

The Mirror description says nothing about any sort of saving throw, someone just has to look into it. And if someone is looking right at me holding the mirror, and I am trying to aim it at them, I would say that I have a pretty good chance of getting them reflected in it.

And for the animate objects, it is true that it says nonmagical material, but I interpret that to mean that I can't make a magical sword animated, or a Daern's Instant Fortress, or something of the like. I'm not so sure that it includes an object with a duration spell on it.

Oh, and can I cast a spell through the Ring Gate, and the turn it 90º, blocking his Line of Effect/Sight to me?

EDIT: One last question- I am sure that this has come up tons of times, but as the search feature is down I am doomed to ask it once more: how much damage would a gargantuan boulder do to someone if it was shrunk down, tossed at them or dropped, and then blown up again?

If your holding it, then he can target you through it just like a tower shield.

It says in the description that "each ring has an 'entry' side and an 'exit' side." From this it would seem that if after casting a spell through my ring, if i then turn it 180º, any spell cast through the other one would come out not facing me. Or if I just put the ring down, how can he see me to target me?

And if someone is looking right at me holding the mirror, and I am trying to aim it at them, I would say that I have a pretty good chance of getting them reflected in it.As I mentioned earlier, it would actually be pretty darn hard to get the angle just right at 300'. Assuming you have some viable way to aim it, I might still have you make a ranged attack on the target area.

Think of trying to reflect the sun onto a specific area at 300'. Now think of trying that without a glowing reference point (i.e. instead of reflecting the sun, you're actually reflecting the person's image back onto themselves).

And the person would still likely have to make a spot roll to see themselves in the mirror. Assuming perfect visiblity, perfect aim and a perfectly reflective mirror, they are still trying to spot a human sized figure that is effectively 600' away. They would be a tiny dot on the mirror.

One last question- I am sure that this has come up tons of times, but as the search feature is down I am doomed to ask it once more: how much damage would a gargantuan boulder do to someone if it was shrunk down, tossed at them or dropped, and then blown up again? The shrink spell can allow you to take a 3’ to 4’ wide boulder and shrink it to about the size/weight of a cue ball. A good boulder will likely weight about 200 lbs. per cubic foot, and you can shrink 2 cubic feet per caster level. Per the rules, dropping something from 10’ feet* will do 1d per 200 lbs... so about 2d6 per caster level. Halve this for a not so good boulder.

Meanwhile, a (custom made) big lead ball could weigh about 600+ lbs per cubic foot, so it could do about 6d6 per caster level if dropped from 10’.

*This scenario assumes you could drop it (at full size) at 10' above the target. Merely throwing it at them should do a lot less, but I'm not sure how much. Perhaps rate it as a Collosal/gigantic sling stone.

If your are hiding behind a tower shield, you have full cover. And yet spellcasters can still target you by targeting the shield you are holding. Same mechanic is going on here.

Quicken a save or die target spell on the ring, if someone is holding it there is a save involved and you know that someone is holding the ring, follow up with what ever you like.
If no one is holding the ring (you know because your quicken spell failed), then pop an acid fog through the ring, or disintigrate it outright. Either way it is an unattended object and its saves should be pretty bad.
mvincent

03-31-05, 07:35 PM
How much do you think such a lead ball would cost?Using cheap (unrefined/unrolled) lead? Perhaps 1-2 cp a pound. So a 6 ton chunk (suitable for a 10 lvl. Wizard) would cost about 120-240 gp.
(I had mine made into the shape of a large anvil). A DM should treat it as ammo though (i.e. breaks after one use).

For comparison: as mentioned, a gold or platinum ball would weight more per cubic foot (allowing for more damage) but would cost 50 gp and 500 gp per pound each (so a wizard might invest 1 million gp in a gold ball, or 10+ million in a platinum one). Some bling-bling to save up for... ?

Don't Prismatic Sphere and Resilient Sphere block Astral/Ethereal travel? If that is the case then you can't cast anything through a ring gate if they are on opposite sides of the spheres. (inside /outside that is)

Ah, but I doubt the bard I will be using this against will really be able to do much :D Besides, if i drop the ring on the ground at the end of each of my turns, and then pick it up again at the start, there isn't much that he can do (although a cloud type effect probably would work:()

13) If I have my Ring Gate in a Glove of Storing, and at the end of my turn I send it back, does this work to ensure that he can't cast spells in at me?

By the way, many thanks to all of you who have been so helpful in answering these questions.

Did you read the item?

Yes I did ..

It also does NOT say that everyone automatically gets a reflection in it.

:uh-huh:

Uh ... ok, let's see you stand in front of a mirror and not get a reflection!!

If you don't want to use the clairvoyance, and don't like a saving throw, maybe a touch attack, range of 100 ft, would be fair.

That could make more sense ... btw .. I never said it was automatic .. please don't put words in my mouth .. all I said was: "no save" ... big difference, btw .. :tiphat:

Whether or not you get somebody's reflection in the mirror has nothing to do with the skill/ability/strength of will of the target .. it does have to do with your own ability and eye-hand co-ordination .. so yeah, a touch attack would make a heck of alot more sense.

Don't Prismatic Sphere and Resilient Sphere block Astral/Ethereal travel?

Not true .. Prismatic Sphere and Resilient sphere have absolutely no such wordings mentioning either Astral nor Ethereal .. only a Wall of Force mentions Ethereal ..

A Ring Gate does not specify which plane it accesses to transport ... because there seems to be no chance of strange creatures finding their way out .. I would assume that it uses a special "closed" plane ... sort of like a small sub-plane or something .. (is demi-plane the term I'm looking for??)

In any case, yes, it still bypasses it ..

12) Can a Rod of Absorbtion absorb a Mordenkainen's Disjuntion? And is there ever any sort of save when it absorbs any sort of spell, or is it automatic?

You know .. I don't want to sound rude .. but if you read the item descriptions, it would greatly reduce the number of questions you had ..

Here:

Absorption: This rod acts as a magnet, drawing spells or spell-like abilities into itself. The magic absorbed must be a single-target spell or a ray directed at either the character possessing the rod or her gear. The rod then nullifies the spell’s effect and
...

So let's look at MDJ:

Mage’s Disjunction
Abjuration
Level: Magic 9, Sor/Wiz 9
Components: V
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Area: All magical effects and magic items within a 40-ft.-radius burst
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will negates (object)
Spell Resistance: No

No "TARGET" line .. so no, it cannot be "absorbed" by a rod of absorption ..

Note that a Dispel Magic could .. only if Dispel magic was being used as a targetted spell .. (Dispel Magic has several "modes" it operates in .. MDJ doesn't ..)

13) If I have my Ring Gate in a Glove of Storing, and at the end of my turn I send it back, does this work to ensure that he can't cast spells in at me?

This is a better question ... :smirk: ...

hmm ... after reading Glove of Storing ... I'm not sure ... ;)

I'm having trouble deciding whether or not:

a) the Ring is now too small for anything to pass through it effectively ..
b) the Ring is effectively "suppressed" while in stasis ...
