| Mc_Bane10-15-06, 06:52 PM | Now I'm sorry about this, I suspect I'm just being stupid and/or blind, but I've searched the books, this forum and Arms and equipment, and I can't find the answers to these simple questions that I always assumed I knew. Please, find it in your heart to help a floundering soul. 1. Who can use wands? Sounds like a stupid question, but can Gish classes such as Duskblade and Hexblade or Non standard Full casters like Warmage? All arcane casters, only full casters, Bards? 2. Can any spell be cast from a wand by any caster? So, could a warmage cast Grease? 3. Is there a restriction on the level of spell that can be cast. So, for example, assuming he could afford it, could a 3rd level wizard use a wand to cast Finger of Death or Disintergrate? If so, is there some sort of check that needs to be made. Thanks very much. |
| Deathmond10-15-06, 07:05 PM | 1. Who can use wands? Anyone with that spell on their spell list or with ranks in Use Magic Device. Sounds like a stupid question, but can Gish classes such as Duskblade and Hexblade or Non standard Full casters like Warmage? Yes All arcane casters, only full casters, Bards? All arcane casters and all the Divine casters too. 2. Can any spell be cast from a wand by any caster? You have to have that spell on your spell list or have UMD ranks. So, could a warmage cast Grease? If it's on his spell list or he has UMD ranks 3. Is there a restriction on the level of spell that can be cast? Yes, 4th. So, for example, assuming he could afford it, could a 3rd level wizard use a wand to cast Finger of Death or Disintergrate? No If so, is there some sort of check that needs to be made? N/A |
| Loki565410-15-06, 07:08 PM | Wands are Spell Trigger Items so... Spell Trigger Spell trigger activation is similar to spell completion, but it’s even simpler. No gestures or spell finishing is needed, just a special knowledge of spellcasting that an appropriate character would know, and a single word that must be spoken. Anyone with a spell on his or her spell list knows how to use a spell trigger item that stores that spell. (This is the case even for a character who can’t actually cast spells, such as a 3rd-level paladin.) The user must still determine what spell is stored in the item before she can activate it. Activating a spell trigger item is a standard action and does not provoke attacks of opportunity. The bolded portion pretty much answers all your questions. 1. Anyone with the spell on their spell list. They don't need to have it memorized or in their repetoire, just on their spell list. 2. Only if it is on their spell list. Otherwise they need to use the Use Magic Device skill. 3. There is no level restriction. The only prerequisite is having the spell in your spell list (which can be bypassed by UMD). |

| Loki565410-16-06, 04:00 AM | Incorrect. As Deathmond stated above, wands are limited to spells of 4th level and lower per the Craft Wand feat description. For wands, yes. But not for Spell-Trigger items in general. Which is what my post was about. But thanks for pointing that out. |

Wands require the spell in the wand on your class list. Wands are neither Arcane nor Divine (so a Cure Light Wound wand could be used by a Cleric and a Bard.) Does the Warmage have Grease on a class list? If so, yes he can use the Wand. Wands can only be up to 4th level including any level adjusts from metamagic. |
