| poulin7603-11-04, 12:56 AM | Ok now, Yet another thread on the dreaded awaken spell lol Lemme explain the context. My druid (5th level, got a load of cash from the latests adventures but little magical items, so he's loaded) is making a grove (we play heavy roleplay). I got the plan made with the stronghold builder handbook (neat book by the way), desing the layout of the grove (plant growth is helping me a lot to make a "wall" of briar around my grove). Now I'm down at defence. A couple "Awakened" tree will be nice (I should be able to hire some druid to cast it for me). And I planned to have some mighty oak around my grove. During the course of my adventures, I manage to get some assassine vine seeds. Now here comes the interogations... Using plant growth, could I make a seed grow faster ? I know it can make a big zone overgrowth or produce 1/3 more crops, but could it be centered on 1 plant ? If not I guess i'll need to research it. Maybe it could boost 1 hd per casting and take a month of time ? As for the awaken. It work on animals and tree, could it work on a non inteligent plant ? (yeah, like my vine). I mean, it isn't much different than a tree. And like a animal it attack. Or should I research a modified version of awaken ? I want to make a great grove and have some defence in it (my druid is a tad anti-social). And if all else fail (i can't cast awaken on a plant), does anyone know if there is a variant for the spell "hide from animals" but for plants ? (hide from plants). If I can't use cooperation from my vine I would have some rings or scarabs made with the spell on it so I can pass trough the defences. Anyway, I would gladly welcome any suggestion on how to proceed in taht matter (making some dangerous plants either my friends or having a way to bypass them). Thanks in advance and have fun ! |

If your DM says no, then just wait two weeks for the seed to become a seedling, and then zap it. I know it can make a big zone overgrowth or produce 1/3 more crops, but could it be centered on 1 plant? I would allow it in my campaign, especially with the purpose you are proposing. As for the awaken. It work on animals and tree, could it work on a non inteligent plant? Yes. Having an awakened *plant* is probably less powerful than an awakened *tree*. Or should I research a modified version of awaken? I admit that I like this idea better. However, just because you awaken an assassin vine does not mean you have an assassin vine guard, any more than if you awaken an oak tree or a dire wolf gives you a tree or wolf guard. Awakened creatures are NPCs, under control of the DM. Unless you have the leadership feat, you will probably find that the awakened assassin vine views you as no different than any other two-legged mammal terrorizing the forest. And even if you convince it that you mean no harm, it won't have much of an incentive to guard your home when it can more easily use its newfound intelligence and free will to protect the whole forest and find food on its own. |

[/B] I Admit a awaken animal, plant or tree would have free will (not necessarely a lot of intelligence but still). My plan was to convince the assassine vine to live near the entrance of my shack and in exchange I would provide food (and fertilizer at the same time). I'm a neutral druid, I don't care about life and death if it's part of the food chain ;) Thanks for the comment, i'll have something to give my DM to think about when I throw this in his face this weekend lol I need some exterior opinion on that subject else he'll most likely play by the book, and god know the book isn't always right ;) Have fun ! |
