| fionna06-28-04, 09:41 AM | I know this may sound wierd, but my players are looking for a magical item that would silence a baby. In a high-magic word, such a thing would probably be manufactured pretty often ("tired of your baby waking you up all night? Buy Tasha's dummy of silence and enjoy a good night's sleep again!"). How much would it cost? And one more thing, there is a spell that allows you to stuck your familiar in a dimensional pocket, could there be one which would allow you to put your baby inside? Something to allow female adventurers have their little kids around? :) Thanks for any help, Fi |

Crib of silence This use-activated crib produces a zone of silence within its confines whenever a living being being is placed within. The radius of the silence is restricted to the volume of the crib. Used by the ultra rich, the crib of silence has proven a luxury item out of reach of most mothers. CL 3; Market Price: 24,000gp. |
| Edward06-28-04, 07:39 PM | Well most of the time babies cry for a good reason. (contrary to what some believe “I want food/changing/burping/comfort/not to feal bad” is a good reason) Also as a nurse is only a moderately skilled position over the life of every baby a mother will produce a nurse is far cheaper than a crib of silence. Considering a nurse will also provide a baby with its needs it is a far more attractive option to most parents A nomadic culture will develop ways to keep children quiet in dangerous situations while travelling but probably based on uses of the heal skill rather than expending the vast resources to produce magic items. A magical pouch for your child could be produced but I would not consider taking a baby into a place where it is not unlikely that I will die and the baby will be eaten/sacrificed/abandoned/rased in the ways of evil a very good idea. Especially when I can hire a nurse to look after him in town and leave sufficient wealth for his raising and education in case of my untimely death for far less gold than the cost of items to make taking him with me convenient. | Seeker9506-29-04, 08:48 AM | In line with Edward's comments... Although I offered a magic item to fulfill the initial request, I would not advocate its use. |
| JoshRodriguez06-29-04, 12:00 PM | Bah. Babies aren't REAL people. Go ahead and stuff them in sacks and ignore their constant plees for attention/affection/food/love. Noone's gonna care except for some touchy-feely action groups. And they're probably not people, too, so you can safely ignore them as well. |
| Shr3dZ06-29-04, 01:50 PM | Ignoring a babies plea (evil act) will definitely get the attention of the Paladins! |
| fionna06-29-04, 01:54 PM | I am not sure why you take it so personally, JoshRodriguez, but maybe it's just that we perceive magic in game differently. My group prefers to have magic as something that makes your life easier, and thus should be used for the practical things, not reserved for sages and wizards locked somewhere in towers... But the need for a "dummy of silence" and a safe place to keep the baby arose in game at the moment when the group members realised that the mysterious BBEG wants them dead. One of the PC's girlfriend just had a baby and that PC fears that 1) the baby's life might be in danger 2) there's no way he could protect his family alone, that the only chance is to unite the group's forces to protect all members. So he has asked me whether the mages in town could produce something to help him achieve this. I quite frankly didn't expect to be accused of having no feelings for babies and not seeing them as humans. I just thought that if there are spells that allow one to create extradimensional mansions, to bring back to life people who have been dead for decades, and other fantastic deeds, then definitely some female wizard or cleric, who happened to have a baby and did not want to forfeit her adventuring career, would come up with something that would make her life easier... Just my two copper pieces... |
| JoshRodriguez06-29-04, 02:23 PM | I assure you, fiona, my entire post was done tongue-in-cheek. :) I'm quite aware that there are perfectly good reasons to want a baby quiet. A coworker of mine was a child at the time when her people (the Mongh) were being persecuted in Laos. Her parents were attempting to sneak her across the border so that they could get to the US and needed her to be quiet. They gave her opium because if she made any noise they'd be discovered and all killed. So please don't think I didn't understand or was somehow against the idea. I like babies. Sometimes even without a delicious garlic sauce. |
| Edward06-29-04, 06:25 PM | Ok now we have the actual situation I can be a bit more helpful. Consider this item. swaddling clothes of comfort. These fine baby garments will keep the child at a comfortable temperature clean and dry in all non-extreme environments (any environment where you are not risking damage). They incorporate a dipper that will become clean and sanitary withe a simple shaking (although you want to do it somewhere where you don’t mind leaving baby droppings). prerequisites craft wonderus item, prestigitation. Base price 1000gp. This will make caring for the child much easier on the road and can be made in a day. You could add a calm emotions effect that will remove most of the crying problems. This would bring the base price to 13500gp (assuming slot affinities are allowed for calm emotions) this will take 14 days to have made and I don’t know if your situation will allow for that. For more dangerous parts of your travels spells like sleep will be best. Probably delivered by potion, as this doesn’t have the noise of a scroll. When sneaking past the most dangerous of arias use silence ether cast from your clerics own spells or keep some scrolls in reserve. Be warned attentive individuals may notice the lack of sound if you take the silence effect within range of them. If you really want an item of continual silence it is worth 12000gp (subject to slot affinity) it will take 12 days to make and as a necklace you put on the baby in dangerous situations (perhaps a charm necklace with a reversible charm to activate and deactivate it) it could silence all sound made by the child. I am however worried about its implications when used by a character to avoid needing move silently. Edward |
| Seeker9506-29-04, 07:27 PM | I think Edward has hit upon the solution, and an entire line of magic items! Anybody want to take a crack at the following baby items (or adding more)? Pacifier of Sustenance Mobile of Calming Rattle of Fascination Diaper of Absorption Band-Aids of Healing |
| isbavatar06-29-04, 08:35 PM | "I am however worried about its implications when used by a character to avoid needing move silently." Isn't that like worrying about a Ring of Invisbility being used by a character to avoid needing the hide skill? It's in the game. Hopefully you're not playing with individuals that will abuse the rules and are more concerned with enjoying a game than some concept of 'winning.' In fact, a number of years back I had always meant to play a cleric / rogue able to produce magical silence. The idea was even used in the novel "Spellfire" back when the spell had the full title of Silence 15' Radius. Besides, it is not as if PCs are the originators of all good ideas: have NPCs use the same strategies. Have veteran fighters conscious of the trick and trained to instinctually swing behind them when they're suddenly aware of an absence of sound due to the silenced rogue creeping up to attack. Or just let them have their fun. And to stay on topic: how about a Potion of Silence? Use the Swaddling Clothes of Comfort for everyday distress-reduction, and the Potion for those "don't make a sound or those fifteen beholders will find us" times. Much cheaper. Maybe you could even spike the kid's milk bottle with the potion for more mild, continuous use. |
| Edward06-29-04, 11:26 PM | I just realised I forgot the duration modifier. That would be *2 the amulet of silence would be 24000gp so 24 days to make (not good you are in a rush). I had compared it to a ring of invisibility and considered in cheaper. Also it eliminates the possibility of listen being used against you where invisibility can be noticed with a spot 20. so I probably will let silence stand at 24000gp. The calm emotions effect has a rounds duration so the multiplier is *4 resulting in a base price of 48000gp. 49500 gp for the swaddling clothes of comfort I mentioned. I very much doubt you have time for that As to the other items requested Pacifier of Sustenance As the ion stone. 4000gp Mobile of Calming Based on calm emotions. Always on 48000gp Rattle of Fascination I’m not shore what to base that on probably only a few grand Diaper of Absorption Prestigitation will suffice with a discount for not being as effective as you could make the spell for babies. 700gp Band-Aids of Healing Single use, use activated CLW 50gp Single use, use activated CMW 25gp Of cause only the wealthiest families would consider most of these items as a well trained nurse is cheaper than any of them. The bandaids being the only notable exception. Are milk bottles available in this era? Edward |
| smrtgmp06-30-04, 01:35 AM | Hell, since the baby's going with you on adventures, and sice it is likely far lower in level than the rest of the party, it wont take it long to level up given the nature of the CR system. I say train it as a wizard and outfit it with a few wands. Make it earn its keep. |
