A few questions about Magical Item Creation [Archive] - Wizards Community

Not that I particulary care since I would just house-rule on these anyways. But I was curious what the official answers are to these following questions.

1.) According to the DMG, magical item creation can be "split" up amongst several people in order to fulfill all the requirements i.e. a wizard with Craft Magic Arms and Armor wants to create a + 2 holy longsword he is 10th level so he easily meets the requirement for the +2, and then his cleric friend provides the spell needed for the holy enchantment.

My question is, can other prerequisites like XP cost be shared or even completely provided by someone OTHER than the person with the Craft feat?

2.) A quick second question. There is some confusing language about adding secondary effects (i.e. wondrous item-style effects) to a weapon (or armor). Do you double the cost of the secondary property or do you pay 150% of the cost of the secondary property. i.e. I want to craft a +2 longsword with the ability to shoot a 5th caster level fireball once per day. A 3rd level spell @ 5th caster level once per day is: 1,800gp x 3 x 5 / 5 = 5,400gp.

If I added this to the magic longsword would it cost me 10,800gp or 8,100 gp?

3.) What's the deal with Craft Wondrous Item? Is there anything you CAN'T do with it? What I mean is.. why take Craft Ring or Craft Rod since it seems like Craft Wondrous Item could just as easily make those items anyways.

Craft Wondrous Item can't make rings or rods, that's why.

As far as splitting things up goes, it states specifically that only the "item crafter" can pay the base XP cost (in full), and I would rule that this is the same character who provides the item creation feat. As far as other requirements goes, so long as all of the spells are provided for each day of the casting, that's really all that's necessary.

As far as adding multiple effects to a single weapon or armor, you simply add them up - since most weapon enchantments add +1 to the cost, it scales automatically. What's better? A +2 longsword, or a +1 longsword of shock? As far as making a sword that shoots fireballs, I'd work it like magical items, pricing it at 1.5x cost for the additional wondrous effects, and would think about including Craft Wondrous Items (since Craft Arms & Armor only has certain enchantments it can give to weapons and armor, as per the list)... :S Hmm...

Part 3:
For rods, there is no reason. Craft Rod is a useless feat.
For rings, the reason is: the "ring" is a slotted item with no affinity requirement. This affects pricing. Since a "ring" can only be made with Forge Ring, CWI cannot duplicate it. Any other piece of jewelry you make for the fingers, using CWI instead of Forge Ring, counts as an unslotted item -- double the price.

Thanks for part 3 answers.

Any answers for questions 1 and 2?

1. Yes. and No. Yes... anyone actually involved in crafting the item can supply xp, but the supplier must supply all of the xp. No...Nobody other than the crafter(s) can supply xp unless your DM uses an optional rule like that found in Rules of the Game Part 7.

2. Based on the most recent Rules of the Game Part 7, it appears you would double it, because a weapon is not a slotted item. I apply the 150% rule instead, mostly because I have always treated weapons as "slotted". It is ultimately up to your DM.

I'm playing and i've got the feat Practiced spellcaster which i chose for my cleric side which is 3rd level. My wizard level is 3rd as well. so for my cleric side i'm at 6 CL. which means my heal spells heal more.

I want to make an item. Do both my casting levels stack together to determine my total caster level i can make or do i just go with the highest single class to determine what items i can make?

I believe caster level 3rd for item creation. Differing caster levels do not stack for item creation and I believe Practiced Spellcaster does not count for item creation...(does not list item creation bonus specifically under that in the feat)...

As for the Wondrous item vs Ring vs Rod similarities, If I were the DM I would just merge most of the item creation feats into each other;

*Scribe Scroll and Brew Potion are covered by the same feat
*Craft Wand and Craft Staff are covered by the same feat
*Craft Magic Arms and Armor and Craft Construct are consumed by the same feat, and all Rods that double as weapons are likewise subsumed into this feat.
*Craft Wondrous Item absorbs Forge Ring, and all Rods that cannot be used as Weapons.
*Attune Gem and Craft Contingent spell are covered by the same feat, in addition the contingent spells cannot be dispelled but have a physical form (you guessed it--gems).

Item Creation Feat are no more or less of a prerequisite than any others in an item's description, and can be provided by an assistant to the crafter just as a spell, skill, or race requirement can. I.E. a 20th level Cleric with no item creation feats can team up with a 3rd level Adept who has Craft Wondrous Item, to create a Ring of Protection +5, with the Cleric providing the caster level, spell prerequisite, caster level minimum (for the +5 bonus), and the XP costs, while the Adept covers the item creation prereq.
