Casting Time: Full Round Action
Range: Personal
Effect: One missile plus one per 3 caster levels
Duration: 1 hour/level or until discharged.

Your eyes glister with force as you evoke several magic missiles. Instead of being hurled at your foes however, they stay around you... waiting...

This spell evokes one missile plus three per caster level that surround you. These missiles float around you and attack anyone that attacks you with a melee attack, dealing 1d4+1 force damage per missile. You may choose how many missiles to discharge at a single opponent at any given time, but the maximum number of missiles you can have in your shield is 12. Each casting adds a number of missiles, until it reaches the max cap.

When all missiles are used, the spell is canceled

As you drink the wine to which you have mixed an owl feather and pearl dust, you suddenly become aware of the precious items before you...

This spell creates a focus for magical energy that the caster can use to identify the properties of magical items (as per the identify spell). He can identify 1 item per 2 caster levels.
Material Component: Owl's feather, glass of wine, crushed pearls worth 250 gp

Tell me what you think of this spell. Comments are always usefull :)

I have done a similar spell to this before.

You need to add in the followin rules:

1) State that one attack gets a single missile, not all the remaining ones.

2A) State that it only works on mellee attacks and touch attacks to keep it a first level spell.

2B) Raise the level and let it work on any attack, but this requires chaning range to Close, Medium or Long. I would say that Close is a 2nd level, Medium a third, and Long a 4th level spell.

Also note, you have inspired me. I will be writing a new spell called Active Missile Defense.

Done. But I did mention that you can chose how many missiles to discharge

One very minor change..

These missiles float around you and attack anyone that attacks you with a melee attack, dealing 1d4+1 force damage per missile.

Although it is implied in the [force] descriptor and in your general description of the spell ("your eyes glister with force"), you should specifically state the damage is force damage to avoid any ambiguity.

Otherwise...a very nifty idea and one I might "borrow.":D

I've adjusted the force damage and added a new spell that I would like comments on :)

At one missile every three levels, you wont reach the max of 12 until a CL of 36. Most 1st level spells stop advancing long before epic, and this should be no exception.

Since you cant just fire them all off right away like your standard magic missile, it seems only fair that you should get more missiles from a single casting. Maybe have the spell progress like magic missile (i.e. 1, +1 for every 2 levels beyond 1st) but increase the maximum to 10 rather than 5. I think that would be fair.

Actually, if you have CL 12 and you cast the spell, you get 4 missiles. 3 castings will have brought you up to 12 missiles. Each casting adds to the number of missiles, up to a maximum of 12. Also, as written, the spell gives effect first at 3rd level  not good.I'll rewrite that

ahh, I didnt realise you intended multiple castings to stack.

I cant recall ever seeing that happen, but since you wrote a maximum into the spell it sholdnt get too out of hand. Even so, its a touch unorthadox (not that thats always a bad thing).

The only real problem I can see is that it will require some book keeping to know how many missiles you have to dispose... but that's all. Original mechanics gives plenty of flavour to the game :)
