| rudie09-06-06, 03:29 PM | I made a system for sorcerers to more randomize their spell selection. If sorcerors are inborn with magic, they should have no choice as to what spells they have. My system goes as follows: roll 1 d10 1.abjur 2. conjur 3. div 4. ench 5. evok 6. illus 7. necro 8. trans 9. univ 10. roll again Then you choose the spell itself by rolling another d10, the number on the die is the spell you must take from the school you previously rolled. If the die number is to high, (for example you roll a 7 but there are only 5 spells) you take the last spell on the list. Lets take a 4th level sorc.'s 1st lvl spell list as an exapmle. 6 1st lvl 1st lvl: set 1: school roll:7 (necro) spell roll: 9 (ray of enfeeblement) set 2: school:3 (div) spell roll:3 (detect undead) set 3: school:3 (div) spell roll:1 (comp lang) set 4: school:5 (evok) spell roll:1 (burning hands) set 5: school:6 (illus) spell roll:8 (ventriloquism) set 6: school:6 (illus) spell roll:4 (silent image) This can be applied to any class by taking out the school rolls. However I made it especially for sorcerer and/or wu jen (replace schools with elements). Divine classes pray for the spells they wish to have, and other classes learn them from practice and memorization (as with warmages and bards). Any comments, suggestions, or questions? |

| tarkin09-06-06, 03:53 PM | Your system is unplayable and is based on false information and false logic. A Sorceror gets way too few spells to be playable using it, unless he is extremley lucky. It ignores self selection. I.E. people that roll no attack spells would NOT become adventurers. Say I am a good runner. I could train for marathons or for sprints. In either case I was born to be a good runner. Whether I become a world class marathon runner or a world class 50 yard dasher is up to me. In either case, only someone that was born to run would be capable of winning the olympics. |
| Wind of Darkness09-06-06, 04:09 PM | Dear God man! Haven't the Sorcerors suffered enough!? Do you have any idea how bad this gimps them? Any at all? I mean... Holy... Sorcerors barely get any spells as it is. Preventing them from choosing those few spells they do get dooms them to inadequacy. |
| rudie09-06-06, 04:12 PM | Alright point taken and idea trashed :) I guess its mainly for my games because I always seem to get the people who pick no defense spells at all. |
| HaikenEdge09-06-06, 04:58 PM | If they don't want defensive spells, why force them into it? Just drop an antimagic field on them and laugh. |
| The Simbul09-06-06, 05:21 PM | Just because your talents may be inborn doesnt mean they are random. If sorcerers are inborn with anything, they are inborn with an aptitude for magic, which they then can direct towards producing the kinds of magical effects they so choose. Moreover, the "inborn" background fluff is not true of all sorcerers--the class has no requirements or background limitations to gain a level in it, and a character can "learn" to multiclass into sorcerer just as easily as they can learn any other class. Magic is something that pervades every aspect of the D&D universe. Sorcerers are a class that learns and casts arcane spells in a inuitive and "haphazard" way when compared to a Wizard--but that does not mean they must be 1/4 Dragonblooded or the distant descendent of an outsider to explain why they can intuitivively cast spells. You can simply be an ordinary 110% pure Human, who simply happens to have "the gift" to be a sorcerer As for the system itself, the reason WHY sorcerers have so few spells known is because it is assumed they will select the spells they want. Do you require players to randomly roll their race, class, feat selections, skill point allocation, and equipment? Because that is precisely what this system does. |
| Seerow09-06-06, 05:42 PM | I dunno, double, or even tripple or quadrupple spells known, and I might say it's good. But if you keep spells known as is? No. |
