From the SRD.

The subject gains the Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores of the new form but retains its own Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. It also gains all extraordinary special attacks possessed by the form but does not gain the extraordinary special qualities possessed by the new form or any supernatural or spell-like abilities.

This means that if you polymorph / wild shape into say a wolf, you cannot use scent. Of if you polymorph into a viper snake, you cannot use it's poison. Or if you polymorph into a cheetah you cannot sprint like a normal cheetah. If you polymoprh into a bat you cannot use blind sense to locate your surroundings.

Now I think you're gonna feel pretty stupid when you try and fly into a cave for the first time and fly straight into the first wall because you're the only bat that does not have blind sense.

I mean imagine the poor wizard that fails his baleful polymorph save and is turned into a bat, and fails his will save afterwards. The only damn stupid bat that is head banging every tree and rock it comes aross.

There, thats my gripe. I think it sucks that you dont get Extrodinary speical qualities when polymorphing.

This means the only real use for polymorph is to get a big claw, or wings, or become small to get through something.

You cannot polymorph into squid an eject ink... (though you can grow 8 sucker tentacles, the spell fails to give you a fully functional bladder)

I mean whats the point of being a druid, and changing into an animal like a blood hound and not be able to use your scent ability.

Okay, gripe over.

Are you the DM? Change it.

Are you a player? Ask the DM to change it.

Thats why mages made Shapechange, you get everything the creature had save spells and spell-like. And yes, thats exactly what polymorph is meant for, the old man in the silly hat turns into a big ol' bear and eats you, or for a quick escape say by changing into something with a nice fly speed. But you still gain extraordinary special attacks which can be very useful.

Phenzy-> Yup, I am the DM, and I will change it in my game.

So my house rule will be, polymorph allows you to use EX qualities for all Animal Types, though any other type is purely at the DM's discression.

Barlock-> thanks, if might be easier just to make wild-shape follow the shape change rules instead of polymorph... as most animals tend to not have super natural abilities.

CaoSlayer-> probably do have good vision, but it's not going to help when flying inside a pitch black cave.

I gues

Sounds good to me.

If I polymorph into an octopus, I want to be able to blow that ink out my ass.
