I was wondering if it would be ok for my character to obtain a monkey familiar, rather than a the ones that the players handbook offer you. They have monkey in the monster manual, it is a tiny animal with a CR of 1/6. I was thinking of having the monkey give the caster +3 on climb or balance, or maybe +2 on reflex saves. Think it would be ok?

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Get the Dragon Familiar feat. It's cool.

The reason everyone should want a monkey familiar is, they have hands!

Give 'em a sack of potions, or a wand or two, and you have your own point-defence / medical unit!

Awesome!

my character is gonna have a monkey, i get +2 on ref saves (as what my DM decided) and his name is bobobo-bo-bobobo (because i hate that show and i find the name very annoying and it fits perfectly).

Which one will be named Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, the monkey or the character? :P

If it's the monkey, have the character named Dieter and let him wear all black. (A cookie for the first one to get this reference. My avatar is a hint, btw.)

IMO granting +3 to Climb is more appropriate for a monkey familiar.

They posted this familiar in Dungeon Magazine... and yes, the associated wizard/sorceror recieved a +3 to climb... but here, lets look at it...

Of course, they have hands, four of them, really... Not to mention they're a familiar, much brighter than the average familiar... armed with an intelligence that supercedes even the average commoner. Also, capable of communcation a few levels in, and whats more, it still has hands... It is much better than a medical unit, it's practically a supstituion for the party rogue...

Although it is published material, I think you're DM should know the full consequences of allowing you to take a hairier, but limber halfling familiar...

PS: remember 3.0? at one time the toad gave +2 Con...

Hey now, the average commoner isn't THAT dumb. Just because they have a crappy class doesn't mean they have extra crappy abilities. Sure, a familiar will surpass them in intelligence eventually, but not for a while.
