I love the idea of materia in FF7, but putting it to D&D make sit a little hard and doesn't seem tot fit. So I started to brainstorm ideas to incoperate something similer to a materia. The Item I have made is called a life stone. This is similer to a scroll but instead power it by spending life points (similer to MP in FF games). So here the item

Life Stones
Life stones hold power of spells similar to a scroll. But unlike scrolls the spell can be used multiple times as long as the owner has sufficient life points (see below). Life stones are made of stone or gems but have beautiful carving showing their significance.

Life Points: Life points are new to D&D and only life stones use them. Life stones draw their power from the life of those who use them. Whenever the user uses a spell on the life stone they power the spell by their own life force. You have as many life points equal to your constitution score times 5.

Using Life points: Each spell has a life point cost. The spell level determines the cost. The following list shows the life point cost depending on the spell level.

Spell Level LP cost
0 1
1 2
2 4
3 6
4 8
5 10
6 12
7 14
8 16
9 18

Whenever you spend life points you have a chance of losing con score temperarily. For every 5 LP (life Points) spent you temperarily lose 1 point of con. Spending all your LPs will lower you con to 0 resulting in death. Casting a spell from a life stone follows the same rules for casting spells from a scroll.

Regaining Life Points: Spending life points is taxing for the user. The only way to regain LPs is to get rest. Full best rest will regain 5 LPs. If you are interrupted during the rest (like an encounter) you will have to restart the rest to gain benefits. Spells that raise Con score do not grant extra LPs. Spells that lowers your con score will lower you LPs as well. Every con point drained also drains 5 LPs.

Creating Life Stones: Unlike scrolls you cannot put any spell in a life stone and only one spell can be on one life stone. Only spells that have descriptors can be used. So any spell that has acid, chaotic, cold, darkness, death, electricity, evil, fear, fire, force, good, language-dependant, lawful, light, mind-effecting, and teleportation can be used in a life stone. Creating a life requires the Create Wondrous Item feat. The cost is Spell Level x Caster level x 2000 gp.

Any suggestions/comments to make it balanced (though it looks balanced now).

I had been inspired by the same idea and came up with a item called Spell Stones. I'm not sure why you came up with the life points thing. Was it just to simulate MP or do you like spellpoint systems?

It's actually not a new idea. I was looking through my Dragon Magazine archives and found an item from 1st edition DnD call spell focus items. Basically, if you had an item of fireball focus and had memorized lightning bolts, you gould give one of them up and it would cast fireball. Exactly what my item did and pretty close to yours.

I wish I could find some way to put a market price on it for 3rd edition.

I'm not too familiar to the dragon magazine you mentioned. Your correct, I chose spell points to simulate MP from the FF games. Like in FF games you can use materia all you want as long as you had enough MP. And I wanted to have it the same way, but didn't want to make a list for a MP for the items. it would take to long. So I decided on life points to power the stone. MP from the FF games seem to come from within, So I designed LPs the same way. I used Con since it's like your life score in a sense.
