Power Word, Stop (Alteration) Level: Magic-user 5 Casting time: 1 segment Duration: Instantaneous Components: V Range: 0 (centered on caster) Area of Effect: 1"/level You utter a single word of power that stops all actions in the round. Arrows drop in midflight, charging footmen lose all momentum. In effect, the round is over. Anything that happened before the segment the spell goes off happens, but no further action may be taken in the round by anyone. 3.x version (much more interesting, due to 6-second rounds instead of 1-minute rounds) Power Word, Stop (Enchantment) Level: Sor/Wiz 5 Components: V Casting Time: 1 Standard Action Duration: Instantaneous Range: 0 (centered on caster) Area of Effect: 10 feet/level Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: No You utter a single word of power that stops all actions in the round. Arrows drop in midflight, charging footmen lose all momentum. In effect, everything that happened before your initiative count (since things, in theory, happen simultaneously in version 3.x) is cancelled and didn't actually happen. Actions after the spell goes off may be taken normally. I made this up on a whim. Tell me what you think. |

It's a 9th level power, in the Nomad list of powers (so very specific, unreachable by other psions before epic levels) and costs the bargain price of 1,000 xp to use. |
| Murr-Quan Lord #203-26-05, 01:04 PM | It sounds a little unwieldy as written ... maybe everything happens simultaneously, in v. 3.5, but there's still a linear flow of time, and this spell allows one to affect things he's already seen happen. Perhaps it should prevent everyone from taking actions until the caster's next turn? I think the overall idea of the spell is a good one, though, and you may even have pegged the level correctly. A spell that stops everything for a whole round Maybe not the most practical thing sometimes, but it could certainly get people to listen. Maybe you should even tie it into the Diplomacy skill somehow, say what kind of check you could make right after casting this or at what penalty. |
| Kyuketsukiouji03-26-05, 01:07 PM | Way too powerful as written. You'd have the wizard and everyone in his party delay every round, just to "undo" everything that the monsters do. I'd make a power word version of hold person, for level 5. (no save, hp limit as usual...) |
| dantedarkstar03-26-05, 04:46 PM | I once made Power Word, Delay. It stopped time for the target, just like 1 round duration Temporal Stasis, was 4th level spell and affected enemies up to 60 hp (I think). Or maybe it was 40 hp ? I don't remember. |
| DudeMan10103-26-05, 05:56 PM | What if the caster is in a small spacecraft traveling at .999c passes near a kobold, and casts this spell, catching the kobold in it's area? |
