| gorion03-25-04, 08:43 AM | Mighty archmages of this board, I need your help. In our last session my party has been captured. An evil wizard has launched on us a DM-created spell, and after that asked us to kill the King in ordert to avoid our death. From what I could observe the spell works like Hide Life (9th level, Tome&Blood) with an important difference: he has control of the little piece in which the vital force is, and if he destroy that small piece life force doesn't return in the body, but instead the subject become dead. Now, my wizard (5th level Abjurer) needs to find a way to: a) Save the King b) Save his life c) Capture the evil wizard (not alone, it's impossible) d) Don't put in danger other party members My current plan is: a) Find a wizard that could cast Mage private Sanctum for me. In this way I could be safe from scrying and divinations. b) Cast Magic circle against evil. Just in case I have also some Enchantments on me. c) Since I don't know if the evil wizard is able to know what I'm thinking I'll assume that he can. So I need to find a way to write a letter to the temple of Tyr, explaining the situation, without that he can realize something. I'm thinking of writing a normal letter to my parents, with some Capital letters somewhere. Then, just ask someone to copy on a new letter only capital letters in order to have the letter for the temple. d) Since I don't know if the evil wizard is able to know to which person I'm speaking I'll assume he can. So I'll use a third person to speak with the clerics, possibly a child. e) Try to convince the clerics to simulate the death of the King in order to have a chance to capture this bad boy. The big problem is to make it work. any suggestions? Mind Blank would help, but I can't afford it. |
| Archangel03-25-04, 09:40 AM | This all sounds a lot like a Finger of God thing! DM does what he likes and you cannot do anything about it. Tell me how long is that DM playing D&D as a DM? To help you: Have you had any clues about if the wizard can know what you are thinking and know who are you talking to? If not then assume he doesn't because them it is too much for your lvl 5 wiz to know(you are metagaming)! What alignment are you? If good try to warn the king even if it kills you(good sacrifice); if neutral just do the dead and later explain that you had to; if evil do it and try to profit from it! *Smites ArchDemon |

He didn't seem to get the message. However, he could also be trying to fool me. I don't think it's metagaming for a wizard put in front of an unknown spell (strange for a wizard with a +14 in spellcraft and Knowledge(Arcana)) to imagine the worst possible scenario. Expecially when the player (me) don't think that the evil wizard can do nothing to know what I'm thinking about;) My wizard is Lawful Neutral. |
| Luminous Crayon03-25-04, 11:14 AM | Explain more about this DM-created spell. Has the NPC wizard gotten control of the PCs' life forces, or of the king's life force? I've read that paragraph a few times, and am unable to figure this out. Is it that the wizard has cast the spell on you and your companions, and is threatening to kill you unless you do what he says? You realize that any Evil Wizard (tm) worth the title will not simply stop there, but will continue extorting you like that until you get your life force back. An Antimagic Field would be a great place to protect yourself from divinations and enchantments, and to write your letter without fear of scrying. Hang out there until it's reasonable to assume any enchantments that may be on you have expired. Note that you should be able to use Spellcraft to try to identify anything you have to save against, so even if you fail the save against a Charm Person or similar, a Spellcraft check against DC 25+spell level will tell you what it is. Secret Page will disguise your letter. Good luck. |

I've read that paragraph a few times, and am unable to figure this out. It's because I'm not a great writer in English :D The evil wizard has magically taken out a bit of our heart while we were unconscious, storing our life force in it. My PC has been able to understand that the process is similar to Hide Life. In order to remain alive he asked us to kill the King. Is it that the wizard has cast the spell on you and your companions, and is threatening to kill you unless you do what he says? You realize that any Evil Wizard (tm) worth the title will not simply stop there, but will continue extorting you like that until you get your life force back. This is why killing the King doesn't seem a solution to my wizard. I don't know if the Antimagic field could work. If the spell is like Hide Life antimagic field couldn't do much. However, also the other spells couldn't do much either.. |
| lanilifar03-25-04, 02:53 PM | 1) Set about plans to kill the king, and keep the evil wizard informed of your progress. 2) Hire a thief to steal your body parts, Hire a great thief, pay him a lot of money, promise to make him magic items, whatever he wants, but he must return the parts to you. (Don't tell him your life hangs in the balance, just make it seem like it is an inconvience (ok, if he really is great, he'll probably figure out how important it is). 3) Non-detection, Misdirection, and Prot from Evil are your friends. Make scrolls of them to supplement your casting ability. 4) If he can read your thoughts all the time, you are pretty pooched, so I would asume he can't. If he can, any letter writing plan you have must be thought first, so that wouldn't work very well. Hopefully the DM is reasonable and will allow one of the above 3 spells to protect you if your thoughts are subject to being read. 5) If you can get the church involved, that is a good thing, clerics will be helpful to you. Tyr may not be the best choice, they might be too strict to allow you to run around free (if I were them I would lock you up, in case you really were trying to kill the king). Tymora is probably better, or even Mask in this case (they might be able to help with finding that great thief as well). |
| beaver102403-25-04, 07:13 PM | Ooo Oooo this is the perfect chance to cast that ever useless spell Secret Page in order for you to send the message to the clerics of Mystra. Clerics of Mystra are really the only people who can help you because you can hire them to cast Break Enchantment and Mage's Disjunction on you to remove the spell's effects. |

This could put in danger the others party members. Imagine that the wizard find his spell dispelled...what would he do? He would start to worry and probably he will kill all... Current Plan: a) Set plans over plans to kill the King, explaining them in full details to the EW(Evil Wizard) b) When the other fellow party members are busy in something I'll assign to them, go the the Magic Shop (TM) and buy a bunch of scrolls of non-detection, misdirection and prot from evil c) Contact clerics of Ilmater/Mystra/Tymora and probably Azuth (a new spell for them..tempting). Try to get help from at least 1 church, and assurance of resurrection in case of my death. d) Stage a false murder. With my party there should be also some Paladins/Good Wizards/Clerics that I'll introduce to other PCs as a group of mercenaries that I've hired. e) The EW will probably contact us after the false death of the King. Help the good boys to kick is ass. f) Find someone that will break the spell g) Buy a big chest to store all the money that the grateful King will give to me:angel: |
| Warduke03-26-04, 04:23 PM | You could also try to hire an occult slayer. I don't know if you would have the time, or if that Wizard is reading your thoughts, but if you can an Occult Slayer is exactly what you need. |

But since we have only two weeks I'm afraid that it's nearly impossible to find him. I should find a way to contact him (I'm a spellcaster too, he wouldn't be so friendly if he realizes it).. After that he needs to find the Mage Keep. I know the town where it is but not the exact place. A bit difficult in 2 weeks, so it's better to keep the money for me. |
