A question about Shapechange [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-30-07, 01:05 PM I'm making a character for an epic campaign, and I have a question about the spell Shapechange.

Can you shapechange into a paragon creature? I don't see why you couldn't, since the paragon template doesn't adjust hit dice.

I figured I would come here for a semi-official ruling before taking it to my DM.

Depends on are templates unique....
Hmm, are paragons unique? If so than no.
If not considered unique than yes you can.

04-30-07, 01:25 PM Shapechange is ultimately based on Alter Self, which forbids the use of templates. Nothing in its heritors (including Shapechange) contradict this, and thus you cannot apply the paragon template to your form.

Considering that this is an epic game, however, it seems reasonable that a feat (Potent Shapechanging) might allow you to add a template to the form you assume, subject to a certain maximum CR increase.

None of alter self, polymorph, polymorph any object or shapechange allow you to acquire templates. Ever.

04-30-07, 03:21 PM They are right, but to give a better explanation of specifically paragon. Paragon is actually still a member of it's base race, except that it is at the upper echelon of ability. You can only ever shapechange into an average member of the species. Not, some higher form thereof.
