Spells like light, and darkness have their target listed as "object". Apparently this means that they can only be cast on inanimate things, but why can't they be cast on a creature? Is there somewhere that says things with a target of object can be cast on something living (or undead) or a part of creature? For instance a creature who can cast light casting it on his own hand and using it as a torch.

I haven't seen anything of the sort, though the point can become academic when you can cast it on a shirt or ring (which you can cover with a gauntlet when necessary).

If such spells can't be cast on creatures, however, a DM has to rule what happens when a corpse (an object) has deeper darkness cast on it, followed by resurrection (assuming it's a valid target for the latter spell). Does the first spell end? Does it get transferred to an object connected to the creature? Does the creature get to carry a spell effect normally unavailable to itself?

Target: Object cannot be cast on creatures. If you want it on someone, cast it on a rock and give it to them. Or have the rogue in your party plant it on them with an effective sleight of hand check. Of course, a little sovereign glue might come in handy too!

corpse + deeper darkness + resurrection
Since the spell was cast on an object, it is "in place". In this case, the now-living-corpse will be enveloped in (and radiate) deeper darkness until the duration ends. No contradictions. No problems.

It should be noted that sufficiently damaging an object dispells spells placed on it (just like sundering a magic item does).

So you can not cast light on a block of ice, and melt it or cut off chips of it.

that could make for some quite interesting happenings

what if someone was to have continual flame cast on their corpse before ressurection?

Human(elf, dwarf, whatever) Torch!

"Flame on!"

We have a new way to tell wether the pile of bones is skeletons or just bones. Canst target object spells at them. If the spell works you are safe.
