What I'm wondering is if the creatures need to remain within 30 feet of each other and/or even within the range of the original caster for the spell to remain active. |
| Seeker9501-10-08, 02:34 PM | In my opinion, yes. There are a few spells with similar "ranges/areas" that explicitly indicate the targets can move further apart after the spell is cast (although for the life of me I cannot recall exactly which ones!), which leads me to rule that remaining within the area of effect is required unless explicitly stated otherwise. |
| CelineSSauve01-11-08, 12:36 PM | Is that the popular ruling then? Can anyone point to the spell Seeker mentioned with an exception? |

No, the spell effects targets not an area... there is a restriction on targeting is all. -James |

They could go however far they'd like and range widely in the spell duration? Assuming a Sorcerer casts it, the spell last 12 hours past the caster's concentration. Do they need to remain in range and within 30' of each other during the concentration phase? |
| Seeker9501-11-08, 02:40 PM | I rescind my answer, after finding this in the SRD: If the spell affects creatures directly the result travels with the subjects for the spell’s duration. If the spell creates an effect, the effect lasts for the duration. The effect might move or remain still. Such an effect can be destroyed prior to when its duration ends. If the spell affects an area then the spell stays with that area for its duration. Creatures become subject to the spell when they enter the area and are no longer subject to it when they leave. As long as they are in the area of effect when it is cast, they can go where they wish. I apologize for the confusion. |

No need to apologise:D I'm just glad I have an answer from the SRD to state now if anyone asks how exactly it happened (good to work within the same rules as the PC if you're a DM and the group if you're a PC;)). Sounds like a fine way to infiltrate an enemy base so long as they don't bring attention to themselves. |

My gnome shadowcraft mage loves it. Bad guys trying to ambush my party can find themselves attacking riding dogs instead of party members and the like while the 'riding dogs' then turn around and start casting spells, etc. It's a wonderful spell. -James |
