Hey-lo.

Quick spells question for anyone that has an answer.

Back in 2nd Ed., there were a number of spells based on affecting time. There were so many infact, that I believe it was possible to have a wizard specialize in the school of "Chronomancy". I always liked messing with people using haste, slow, and all sorts of aging spells. But now I can barely find any spells that have to do with time alteration. Does anyone have an idea if this school still exists in 3.0/3.5? And if so, where can I find it?

Thank you.

This (http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/detail.php?qsID=29&qsSeries=Encyclopaedia) might be a good book to check out. As far as core material goes though, I don't think there's that much. You've got temporal stasis and time stop, of course, and there might be a tiny smattering of time spells in other books, but nothing pops into my head.

In 2nd Edition they actually published a supplement called "Chronomancy". It wasn't the best-written, and a lot of the spells didn't have a practical everyday gaming application, but it was still kinda cool. It even went so far as to delineate how chronomancy was handled in the various published campaign settings of the time (for instance, the Lady of Pain, from the "Planescape" setting, disallowed chronomancy entirely in the bounds of Sigil; seems she didn't want Chronomancers poking their heads into her her past). You could probably find it if you're fortunate on Ebay; I imagine you probably wouldn't even have to pay very much for it.

As far as I know, aside from the Mongoose Publishing supplement that was already noted in this thread, there's nothing in 3rd Edition that lends itself to specialization in chronomancy. With the way they so horribly nerfed Time Stop in 3.5 anyway, I don't know that I'd want to specialize in it.

Manipluation of Time in official 3rd edition sources is functionally limited to a few rounds, or warding an object or person from the effects of time via Suspended Animation.

A carefully worded Wish spell can effectively undo the events of the previous round, and the somewhat overpowered Psionic ability known as Temporal Regression can allow a character to travel back a few rounds in time to perhaps re-do a misfortuneate event.

As far as Epic Spellcasting is concerned, the Epic Level Handbook contains a spell known as Time Duplicate which allows you to pluck yourself out of the next round in the future, so that both you and your future self may simulataneously exist in the current rounds (i.e. twice as many spells/actions), after the current round ends you and your future self vanish, and you reappear the round afterwards. The Epic Level Hanbook effectively states that this spell is the absolute maxim by which time a mortal manipluate time, thus one would imagine Chornomancy (if you can really give it such a grand title) is not the most potent pursuit of magic.

Plucking yourself out of the future is a pretty big change though, especially when it allows your past self to die, but you'll still live! As for limitations it says that it streches time and probability to the limit and more powerful versions of Time Duplicate aren't possible. You can't take a self from more than 1 round in the future, and you can't take more than one version of yourself (from the future, presumably). That leaves a lot of leeway. Time travel would still be quite possible, I think...as well as other things (like aging, spells that make time flow on odd and different ways over an area...etc, etc). Plenty of room.

I liked the Chronomancy book in second edition...but perhaps that was because it seemed to hint at a lot of Doctor Who influences. : )

I've created a whole spell chain out of the -haste- spell (which I've downgraded to -lesser haste-). They're found in my Arcnae Warrior thread. Lesser Haste-> Haste-> Greater Haste-> Extreme Haste. It continues into epic levels with Epic Haste, Legendary Haste, and True Haste, but I didn't post those (I haven't even really balanced those 3 yet- they're just ideas witing for an archmage capable of implementing them). Check them out.

Ahh, chronomancy. My favorite school. Unfortunately, ther eis no official 3rd edition chronomancy, unless you are VERY clever with epic spells (and you have to prove many of the paradoxes you make to your DM as well) For example, if you use the transport seed to timestop yourself three times, you will go BACKWARDS in time at a rate of 1 round/round. This of course makes everything extremely complicated, but fun to try to roleplay.

Thanks to all for your helpful replies. I was pretty sure that material of this sort would be limited, but I had to ask anyways. Thanks agains.

nothing core, but there are some good 'chronomantic' spells in swords and sourcery's relics and rituals 1&2 if you can access them.
