A Question On Spellcasting By Multi-Class Characters [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've just returned to playing D&D after about ten years!!!!

I'm putting my first v3.5 character together which is a Cleric.

I'm considering making him a Cleric/Sorcerer and have a question that I would appreciate your help with.

It regards 'shared' spells - ie spells known to both classes - eg various Detects, Resist Energy, Summon Monster, etc

Suppose I am a 4th Level Cleric/2nd Level Sorcerer and I use a 1st level slot from each class to prepare Summon Monster I (As an example)

When I cast the two spells are they cast as a 4th level caster and then a 2nd level caster?

Or average out as a 3rd level caster?

Or combine as a 6th level caster (Which is my true character level)?

I may be biased here but as both classes know the spells it seems reasonable to me that the levels stack and the spell is cast at my 6th character level.

Is there an official ruling on this?

Or anyone have any opinions?

Many thanks,

brianm

Your spells and your caster-levels for them are completely distinct.

If you prepare Summon Monster I as a cleric 4 and also know it as a sorcerer 2, you will have to designate which version you are casting. The divine will be as a fourth-level caster; the arcane as a 2nd.

Note, that spellcasters tend to make poor mult-classers unles you use a prestige class.

Even then, you usually have to focus your character carefully.

Hmmm...

Thanks chaps.

Perhaps multi-classing is not such a hot idea after all.

Shame...
