In the Spells Prismatic Sphere and Prismantic Wall, It states:

" their effects on creatures trying to attack you or pass through the wall, "

My question is what constitutes an attack? We had a situation where 2 melee fighter and a wizard were fighting a dragon. the round before the wizard put up a prismatic sphere, the dragon breaths and all 3 PCs are in the area effect. the Wizard is protected for the breath weapon. Does the Dragon take the layer effect from the Prismatic Sphere?( The Green Layer proctects from breath weapons, the Dragon would have to make a St vs Poison)

Would a creature that fires a arrow from 200 yards away take 20 pods if his arrow hits the sphere?

I'm not exactly clear on your description of events. If the Prismatic Sphere hadn't been cast yet, then the dragon takes no damage.

I think he wants to know if attacking with a ranged attack provokes the prismatic effect regardless of range.

Guess the easy answer is that the Prismatic spells only have effect on melee attacks.

However, that's not exactly what the spell says. It says 'attacking or moving through'. So 'attacking' could count as shooting an arrow from yards away or casting a spell for that matter. Theas spells are high enuff level that they could send 'feedback' through an attack......

The sphere would not have the retribution effects from attacks that occured before it was cast.

After reading the prismatic sphere spell (in the PH). I don't understand what the confusion is. Could you elaborate choking?

Prismatic Sphere is the ultimate personal defense spell, and Prismatic Wall is its little brother (with the primary problem being that Prismatic Wall doesn't stop flying creatures). As such, neither of these spells has an active offensive component. They're purely defensive. For the magic of a given layer of either the sphere or wall to affect someone, that someone has to come in physical contact with it. So while these spells would definitely stop a dragon's breath weapon, they aren't then going to lash out with the appropriate effect at range to nail the dragon as a magical riposte. The dragon would actually have to try to physically get through the sphere (the wall wouldn't be a hindrance to a dragon, as there are no known versions of the Core Rules dragons who don't have flight capability; in fact, flight is such an endemic part of their nature that their flight profile is used as an identifying means in the Draconomicon).

Change "creatures trying to attack" to "creatures making melee attacks against". The rules aren't written perfectly, but the intent is confered well enough in this case.
