:b: A spell idea come to me today so here it is. What do you think?

Quick Step
lvl: sor/wiz 0 (maybe 1st)
Components: S, F
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Personal
Effect: Teleport 5 - 30 feet
Duration: Instant

This spell allow you to teleport up to 30ft. By simple pointing the silver arrow in the direction you want to go. You must have a clear view of the place you wish to appear in.
Focus a small silver arrow, a value of 2 gold.

Just a simple spell. I would like it to be a 0lvl spell. If as writtenit is not. Please suggest what would be a good

Hmm...a 0th level spell that would allow players to skip most traps, escape from barred cells, even escape from a forcecage. Don't think so....

The first teleport spell (dimension door) is 4th level and teleporting should not ne accesible any earlier in the game IMHO.

Maybe if it only let you go 5 feet (possibly 10, but I dont think so) and couldnt be used to travel through anything. It could help you if you almost fell of a cliff, but it shouldnt let you transport through matter. Thats way too powerful for a cantrip. If you wanted something that was limited to the thirty feet, I would place that probably at 2nd level, but inforce the restriction that it couldnt bypass any obstuctions (jail bars and the like).

If your objective is to be able to move from point A to point B quickly, expeditious retreat covers it.

If your objective is to move from point A to point B instantly, teleport covers it. So does dimension door. (Actually, dimension door is almost the same.

To mimic either of these spells, even in a limited fashion, seems outside the scope of a cantrip. I don't think a short range teleport can be made at any level lower than dimension door.

Yeah...

bypassing traps, pits, barred cages, grappling...

Doesn't sound like 0-level spell at all. Actually, since it doesn't disallow action after teleportation I would be undecided between level 3 and 4 (yes, the same as DD), with leaning towards 4th.

Well, there is blink as a 3rd level plane-shifting spell, albeit very limited. So I might consider a 5ft step through the ethereal plane as a 3rd level effect.

As far as a level 0 teleport goes... :nonono:

Ah yes... if it was through ethereal plane, not astral (like all teleportations), this would be probably OK for 3rd level spell even with it's range. Probably.

For sure if you add the same thing as with DD, so you can't act after. With that, it would be OK even if it allowed to go through full material objects (of course ethereal objects would still block it, as well as abjurations and force effects which extend to ethereal).

:b: Ok, lets see it if I get this right.

Teleport; max distance 900 miles 9lvl caster
Dim Door; max distance 680 feet 7lvl caster

And some of you suggest mine should be 3rd. I think not. Now I can see your point about it being to much for a cantrip, so lets try for 1st.

A formal write up to come later, but for now use these factors.

Similar to teleport affect with these exceptions

Range Short (25ft+5ft/2lvls) 25ft at 1st and 45ft at 9th same as teleport.

Affects only the caster and thier gear.

I doubt you will get much buy-in for 1st level even.

1st level...you're kidding...who wouldn't want this spell when going into a dungeon. The distance is of little matter..it is the possibity to bypass lots of situations that matters...no way would this spell be under 3th level!

cantrip named Quick Step?

Spell should increase your speed by 5' for 1 minute...

Take a look at this spell, then take a look at other cantrips.

Just a biiiiiiit of a difference in power, don't you think?

I'd make it 2nd level at best.

The issue has nothing to do w/ the distance travelled, but the method. The ability to avoid things is very powerful. I'd say 2nd level, though.

Provided - that it's either a full-round casting time, or it always ends your turn to cast the spell.

3rd. Definitely. It's a marginally lower-powered Dimension Door, after all - and one that duplicates perfectly its tactical uses. I'd likely say no entirely, since it really is, for most practical purposes, a Dimension Door duplicate.

There is absolutely NO way you could possibly justify allowing teleportation as a 1st level spell, much less a cantrip.

Hmmm... Aside from reducing it down to about 5' in distance and not going through solid objects/effects, I can't see it getting down to cantrip level.

But for just plain odd effects, here's a change for it.

How about make it sort of an extreme haste that doesn't affect your mental processes? It boosts your body to the point it can do a single action (in this case, moving 30'), blindingly fast, but since it's so fast, and your mind wasn't affected, you were essentially there....and now here in a blink. The consequences of this, in practical terms, is that you still actually traveled, physicaly, that distance, thus triggered any traps, attacks of oportunity, etc. Granted, since you're moving fast enough they'd all get penalities towards hiting you, but they're still there.

If you drop THAT down to a 5' distance, or maybe maxed 10', it *might* qualify as 1st. It *wolud* be rather nice to have such a spell, no matter the distance, that was cantrip level. I can think of quite a few instances where being instantly even just a couple feet over could have made a huge difference.

How about taking it a bit more literally--quick *STEP*. You can only reach a point you could reach by stepping.
Zitchas

So you cas the cantrip and your next step is taken insanely fast? That actually seems a touch weak. Maybe add 5' to your free action move, for the next turn.

Minis handbook has a number of "minor" teleport-like spells. The 2 lowest (both 1st-level I think) are Slide and Benign Transposition. Slide lets you move someone 5 ft, Benign Transposition (a medium or close spell, I can't remember) allows two willing medium or large persons switch places.

At 2nd level, there is Baleful Transposition, in which the switchers do not have to be willing (but get a saving throw). And the is a Greater Slide that lets you push someone 20ft (or more?), I'm not sure that one is 2nd level.

there are also some low level psychoportation powers that closely mimic this spell, but none below 2nd level.

So, 1 spell level down reduces range several thousand times. Let's say for now that "no action after" and "miss chance" are about equal (which isn't true in all situations).

Following that trend 3rd level spell at CL 5th should transport you maybe a fraction of feet :D
And you couldn't act after that...

Oh, so you want 1st level spell that is actually BETTER than Dim Door in most tactical situations ? (no action after is Dim Door most meaningful disadvantage).
Great.

Go on

I say that if you couldn't act after the teleportation (as Dim. Door), it could only affect you and your gear and had small range, it could be possibly 3rd level spell, but I'm not sure.

Now, if we take Ethereal as plane by which it transports, it's lower level. Via ethereal, it could probably be even 2nd level spell, if it wasn't really teleportation, but "step into ethereal" like Blink, but for quite fixed time (1 move action let's say). This would be 2nd level, even if you could act after that...
Yeah, something like:
-----
Ethereal Step
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 1 move acion (See text)

You step into ethereal plane for a moment. You can take single move action
while at ethereal plane, provided you have move action left in your turn. After possible move action, you return to material plane and the spell ends.
-----

You can bypass any barrier that doesn't block ethereal movement, bypass traps, escape grapple and like with this spell. When quickened, it becomes useful in tactical battle. Otherwise, it's mostly useful for bypassing traps and barriers.

dante,
