| Infinitum03-18-07, 01:31 AM | Hello, I'm new to these forums, and I have my first question for all of you masters of the dungeon realms... Here it goes... I am doing an experiment to test the boundaries of powerful summoning spells (mainly "Gate"). In this experiment, I will be attempting to summon the most powerful creatures possible. Looking at the epic monsters on the d20 website and the handbook I notice a fair number of powerful beings, and I'm curious: What could I logically summon from that list? Judge this question based upon a standard level 30 cleric using standard AD&D rules. This is not being determined based on a DM decision and what his/her rules would be in a game, so if you need to judge anything by what would be "allowed", assume that it is. I apologize if there are other threads similar to this, and if there are please direct me to them as I cannot find any... Thank you in advance for your aid and I hope that I wasn't too vague about my idea. It is about 3 o' clock in the morning right now so I'm kind of tired. Thanks again, and greatly appreciated. .....long live Nerull....>.> |

Outsider, 2xHD for battle-pokemon purposes, anything more is bargain-only. Gate, however, is considered one of the most broken spells in all D&D. Without clear constraints on its power by the DM that aren't written in the rules, Gate trivializes the game immensely when it becomes available. Played as written, if the player using Gate is savvy and has access to the Epic Level Handbook, then your game is doomed. Not like Epic-level play isn't bustalicious anyway. Epic is quite seriously unplayable without heavy houseruling by a veteran DM. And this when most veteran DMs would tell you that Epic isn't much fun anyway; the sheer amount of dice to be rolled, stats to be tracked, and time per action isn't worth the effort of killing a troll with more HD and higher saves (e.g. the pseudonatroll...har har.) |

I kept reading over the description of the spell just to make sure things like summoning epic monsters was plausible, so I was flabbergasted when I saw no reason why not. I guess it really is broken >.< (Not that that is a bad thing....>.> |
