| zelvious02-19-04, 11:42 PM | ok, can anyone help me? my wizard when he runs out of spells, i need something to fight with, i want to design something, that i can throw and that will return back to me.[if you have played the video game final fantasy 8, as rinoa, you will know what i want to make.] but this weapon has to be magic getting it to return to me, does anyone know of a spell, cheers |
| Nadaka02-19-04, 11:48 PM | why not use a crossbow? |
| zelvious02-19-04, 11:51 PM | that is a good idea. but i do not want to use it because i want to be creative. i just need some kind of return spell. |
| Tony Vargas02-19-04, 11:58 PM | Returning is a weapon enchantment - check out the DMG or SRD. |
| channel_dunlap02-20-04, 12:25 AM | Returning is a very nice investment for thrown weapons. The rogue in my game is getting returning spears, its kind of interesting. |
| KMFDM02-20-04, 01:49 AM | In Dark Sun (old setting, but being updated) had the chatchka which is a pretty big shuriken usually made of chitin (or hardened saliva from Thri-Kreens). The chatchka is used properly could return to the thrower if it missed. They were very nice weapons back in 2e. |

Making something you saw in a video game is creative? :P +1 [Weapon] of Returning: 8,300* gp + cost of weapon. * The extra 300 here is for the masterwork requirement. |

However, the boomerang in the warriors book does on a miss. |
| CaoSlayer02-20-04, 07:19 AM | simple: a scroll (or prepared spell) of: level 1: Chill touch level 2:flame dagger (the best, fire 1d4 + caster level up to +10, makes touch attack). level 3:flame arrows, greater magical weapon level 4:polimorf into something big like a troll level 6:tensers transformation level 7:morderkainer sword level 9:shape change, black edge of disastre. |
| Capn Charlie02-20-04, 07:32 AM | Three Returning Daggers. One by one as you can afford them. Start with nonmagical at lower levels, then MW, Then +1, then +1 Returning. Then start on a second one. Then Keen them both, then go for the third. Of course your melee will be awful, so proficient or not you might as well look cool. Go with a scythe. Or maybe a sword. Or two swords. |
| Vorpal Warhammer02-20-04, 08:31 AM | I don't care how weak he is, I'd run from a wizard with a Throwing Returning Scythe. |
| Seeker9502-20-04, 09:26 AM | Originally posted by Vorpal Warhammer I don't care how weak he is, I'd run from a wizard with a Throwing Returning Scythe. Vorpal, would you actually allow a scythe to be turned into a throwing returning weapon? |
| Vorpal Warhammer02-20-04, 09:34 AM | Originally posted by Seeker95 Vorpal, would you actually allow a scythe to be turned into a throwing returning weapon? There's nothing in the rules to prevent it, though I admit it would look funny. Picture an archery-focused ranger throwing 5 scythes in a round. Then picture those 5 scythes returning through the air to be thrown again in the next round. :smirk: |

| Edymnion02-20-04, 10:38 AM | A returning Chakram is probably the closest thing to Rinoa's wristblade that you could get in D&D. Believe chakram stats were in Sword & Fist? Other than that, the standard weapon for low level wizards is the crossbow. Does as much damage as many low level spells, and allows the wizard to stay in the back row. Any throwing weapon is going to have a much shorter range than a crossbow, meaning the wizard has to be closer to the action, which means they are that much closer to being killed in melee. |
| dantedarkstar02-20-04, 11:09 AM | Hmm... +1 Throwing Returning Double Sword of Distance... :smirk: who cares about that nonproficiency thing ? It's cool :D (Note: Double sword just so it looks cooler. I am fully aware you can't get 2 attacks from one throw with it.) |
| Heron_Marked_Blade02-20-04, 11:26 AM | Originally posted by dantedarkstar +1 Throwing Returning Double Sword of Distance... :smirk: Err, which end did you enchant with Throwing and Returning? Does it follow that the whole thing can be thrown and returns if only one end of a double weapon is so enchanted? What a frickin' loophole!! |

Just get a wand of Magic Missile, Scorching Ray, or Melf's Acid Arrow If you're low enough level to "run out of spells" (which I have no idea how are doing this, since you have Scribe Scroll for free) you should be able to make do with a crossbow (light or heavy). If you are high enough level to have this better weapon enchanted, you should buy a nice 3rd or 5th level caster wand instead of this mundane weapon. |
| Capn Charlie02-20-04, 06:01 PM | There is such a thing as being too dependent on spells. The notoriously crappy CL of wands and scrolls coupled with the prevalance of SR at higher levels often means thatt once the spells run dry, if you wish to contribute, weaponry is the way to go. And besides, it is just plain cool to go Tenser, drop a keen spell, and lay wast to a group of incompetent followers, hirelings, or commoners to get a point across. |
| PhaedrusXY02-20-04, 06:07 PM | There is a nice spell in the Unapproachable East called Decastave. It creates a Force staff that lasts for 1 round per level, and only requires a melee touch attack to hit with. It's only a second level spell, and the picture of it in the book looks cool. ;) It's a nice spell for a wizard with their crappy BAB and weak strength (usually). And since it's force damage, you don't have to worry about elemental resistances getting in the way. |

Just a nitpick, but you'd have to use the Keen first, as you are totally incapable of casting spells after using Tensor's Transformation. |
| Levism8402-20-04, 07:28 PM | I always liked my +3 Chakram Hat of Returning. A caster of level 9 or above can make it, and it is so much fun. It just looks like a common wide brimmed hat to keep out the sun and than you take it off and chuck it at a target for 1d4 +3 damage. Not much, granted, but still fun. It is really great if you want to appear to be unarmed. |

| Levism8402-20-04, 11:43 PM | No, actually a 16yo "dark spirited" human with a lot of loathing and a bad smoking habbit. |
| Zelphi02-21-04, 07:57 AM | Called Kung Lao? I think I went for a reach weapon and charged alot... worked better with sorcs though... Is there a way to enlarge a reach weapon and then use it as an oversized weapon? Or just use a shocking whip thing... Slings can get ammo from practically anywhere, even in a desert you can freeze lumps of sand and sling those... to what extent and effect is a completely different matter... hell just use mud to rock. - What's the requirements for spell storing weapons, and can you make them (legitemately) release charges on hit... then you could do any number of weirdness with thrown daggers. |
