| gurth01-21-05, 09:23 PM | Hi, I was wandering what's happen, if a Mage with Intel 16 drop to 10 and retreive to his normal score..He has yet his memories spells or he must rest 8 hours and study to prepare again all spells ?? Let's say you have intelligence score 14, you put ring +2 intel now you can learn new powefull spells. You prepare these spells plus the new spells. After study and learn the spells you remove the ring +2. Now you cannot cast any spell above fith level but you put again (one round later) the ring +2 intel. Now what's happen !! You have yet these new spells or you have loose them ?? If so the feeblemind spell is very dangerous for a spellcaster :D your opinions ? Regards |

Articles online even made clear that, should your ability score drop below an acceptable value for spell slots you have available (say, if you are a 9th-level wizard and your Intelligence is damaged to 13), you can still use these spell slots for other spells of lower levels. The same applies in case you do not have a high enough ability score anyway. |
| gurth01-21-05, 10:48 PM | Hi, Thanks and I understant what you say but suppose you have learn "Fireball" and you fail Fortitude saving throw for Poison who damaged yous intel. score (say 16 to 10). After 6 days you have your full Intel score "16". So if you have not cast the "fireball" did you have this spell in your memory and ready to cast it or you have loose it (due to poison) and you must learn it again ?? I not find any rule about that. It's the same question for "Feeblemind" spell; after use a spell like "Wish" on you did you have all spells you have learn before the effect of the "feeblemind" spell or you have forget (or loose) them ?? thx |

He has one 3rd lvl spell slot, two 2nd lvl slots, and three 1st lvl slots. He also has one bonus spell for each of his 3rd, 2nd, and 1st lvl slots. He has prepared two fireballs with his 3rd lvl slots, three glitterdusts with his 2nd lvl slots, and four shields with his 1st lvl slots. He gets hit with a bestow curse and his intel drops to 12. He loses his third and second level bonus slots. Those spells he had there in the bonus spell slots are gone completely, and the spells he had memorized are lost. Furthermore, he can't cast 3rd level spells because he doesn't have at least a 13 intel. However, hes still a 5th lvl wizard, and he still has one 3rd level spell and two 2nd level spells. He is unable to cast the fireball in his single third level slot, so for the rest of the day that slot is occupied (unless he at somepoint gets a bonus to his intel, say from the cleric casting fox's cunning, and he then casts the spell). But once he rests and prepares spells the next day, he could drop that fireball spell and use that slot to prepare a spell he can cast. So he could replace the fireball with a web or a shield or something else of 2nd level or lower. If he doesn't drop the fireball when he prepares spells, then its still there. If he gets remove curse cast on him a few days later, then he could immediately cast the fireball spell. However, the spells that were in his bonus slots were lost, and those spell slots are empty until he prepares spells again. I would think that he could take a few minutes to prepare a couple spells with the empty slots, just as if he had left them empty when he prepared spells that morning. Now in your case, the mage had his intel dropped to 10. So he couldn't cast anything except for 0 lvl spells. Unless he replaces that fireball with a cantrip when he prepares spells, then the fireball will still be there when his intel goes back up. Provided, however, that the fireball was not there because it was from a bonus spell slot. If thats the case, then it would be gone and the slot would be empty. Although he could take a few minutes to prepare a new spell in the slot. |

I would think that he could take a few minutes to prepare a couple spells with the empty slots, just as if he had left them empty when he prepared spells that morning. While the slots are certainly lost for the duration of the penalty, the rules are silent on what happens to any spells that were in them. Are empty slots lost before full ones, or vice versa? Do you lose access to the slots as if the spells had been cast (ie used), or do you just lose access to the slots until your Int increases sufficiently to use them again? If definitive answers have been given, rulebook, FAQ or web references would be appreciated. |
