The ability score requirement for casting is typically 10 + spell level. For Wizards, they use INT. Now lets say we have a Wizard with a 15 INT. Would he be capable of wearing an item (say a ring) that increases his INT and then cast L6 spells while wearing it and losing them once it's removed, or would his base INT beed to be 16? Curious to how everyone here plays it. I've been told the original intent was to base spells off of your base scores, but I've been in gaming groups that have played both sides before. |

Thus, for example, you couldn't cast Owl's Widom on your Cleric buddy, increasing his Wis to 22 and granting an extra bonus 2nd level spell, even if the increase lasted in excess of 15 minutes and the DM agreed that the increase in ability would count as a blank spell slot that can be filled later in teh day, because Owl's Wisdom explicitly denies gaining bonus spells through castings of the spell. Ability enhancement items grant bonus spellslots, usually with some restriction on when they are worn. The Headband of Intellect, however, does not grant increses to skill points when levelling up. Again, by contrast, the various tomes granting inherent bonuses place no restriction on what the increased abilities provide, so there are none. |
