| Jaffolofolus01-26-07, 10:09 AM | I'm playing an Abjurant Champion (Complete Mage) but having difficulty in finding an abjuration spell that gives an armour bonus to AC. (The example given in the book is mage armour, which is not an abjuration spell!) I have scoured the books that I have, but have so far been unable to locate such a spell, (apart from ectoplasmic armour - which only works against incorporeal touch attackes) any ideas please? Many thanks for any assistance. |
| Xylem01-26-07, 10:22 AM | The Book of Exalted Deeds has Luminous Armor (2nd) and Greater Luminous Armor (4th), which are sanctified spells with a sacrifice component (you lose strength when they run out), but they give +5 and +8 armor bonuses respectively, plus they make you glow so bright that sighted creatures are -4 to hit you. They can only be cast on good creatures. I am told that the Spell Compendium contains a spell called Ectoplasmic Armor which gives you an armor bonus against incorporial attacks. If you multiclass with Shadowcaster or Shadowsmith, the 1st level mystery Steel Shadows gives a +3 armor bonus and a +3 shield bonus. Abjurant Champion gives bonuses to shield bonuses as well, so the Shield, Reflecting Shield and Deflect spells all gain a bonus from their class ability as well. |

(The example given in the book is mage armour, which is not an abjuration spell!)That's priceless. Don't bother me with the rules, we must print more books! Perhaps this Ask Wizards (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ask/20061113a) answer is helpful: Q: The abjurant armor class feature of the abjurant champion prestige class (Complete Mage) takes effect whenever he casts "an abjuration spell that grants an armor bonus or shield bonus to AC." Doesnąt that really only apply to the shield spell, since mage armor is a conjuration spell? --Jayme A: If you're only using spells from the Player's Handbook, then it's true that this class feature has a limited impact. However, other resources have provided additional spells that fit the bill, including repelling shield (from Complete Mage) and ectoplasmic armor (from Spell Compendium). |
| Jaffolofolus01-26-07, 10:44 AM | Thanks for the advice, I will have a look at the book of exalted deeds. Yes, I got a similar response from customer services (without the examples). Trouble is, my abjurant champion is a sorcerer, and so not many spells to choose from. I have the shield spell already, its just the armour bonus I need. Not sure about multiclassing further, he is already pretty mixed up (Sorcerer, Dragonheart Mage, Abjurant Champion - and heading towards archmage!) but thanks for the tip anyhow! |
| Xylem01-26-07, 10:50 AM | Thanks for the advice, I will have a look at the book of exalted deeds. That's going to be tricky, since, unless you take several levels of a PrC that grants them, sancified spells have to be prepared, not cast spontaneously. You can most likely get around that using the Arcane Preparation feat from the Complete Arcane however. |
| Jaffolofolus01-26-07, 01:22 PM | Hmm looks like it's time to talk to my GM about inventing a spell then eh? Looks like they were right in the ask wizards quote, that it just means shield for most people! |
| Nezkrul01-26-07, 01:58 PM | the Deflect spells provide a deflection bonus to one attack... they don't get the AbCh bonus. |
| Xylem01-26-07, 03:01 PM | the Deflect spells provide a deflection bonus to one attack... they don't get the AbCh bonus. Wierdly enough, while Lesser Deflect gives you a deflection bonus as you would expect, Deflect gives you a shield bonus for some odd reason. I wonder about the editing ... |
| larrycrack01-26-07, 04:43 PM | Jaff, I have a similar thread posted not too long ago on this same subject. Most of the commentors were not against just moving the spell over to Abjuration. I don't like re-writting the laws of magic when I can avoid it, so I have been working with my player (who is an Abjurant Champion) to create a new spell. |
| Jaffolofolus01-27-07, 05:58 PM | Thanks again for the info everyone. I will see what I can work out with the GM, or try to invent a new spell. (Once I've finished inventing greater improved invisibility hehe) |
| Magrus01-27-07, 06:03 PM | Someone needs to redo the categorization of spells put out by WotC...namely Mage Armor and the Orb line of spells being yanked from Conjuration and put into a better school that fits what they do. Frankly, if I were the DM, I would houserule that because Mage Armor deals directly, as it's ONLY function being protection, it happens to be an Abjuration spell. That's just me though. |
| Nezkrul01-28-07, 01:41 PM | Wierdly enough, while Lesser Deflect gives you a deflection bonus as you would expect, Deflect gives you a shield bonus for some odd reason. I wonder about the editing ... lol i just noticed that :tiphat: weird. |
| penchant01-28-07, 02:18 PM | Yeah, we moved mage armor and greater mage armor to abjuration as well. Not only for the abjurant champion but the Abjuratrion specialist wizard too. A conjurer should not have a wall of monsters AND a buff AC. As for Orb spells, they are fine as conjuration since conjuration can call energy forms into being as well. Since it is conjuration and not evocation the energy is real (likely from some elemental plane) and does not allow spell resistance. |
| Cold Napalm01-28-07, 03:34 PM | As for Orb spells, they are fine as conjuration since conjuration can call energy forms into being as well. Since it is conjuration and not evocation the energy is real (likely from some elemental plane) and does not allow spell resistance. While this kinda works for most of the orb spells, it utterly FAILS when it comes to orb of force...non magical FORCE EFFECT?!? Umm no. Honestly with how much damage these spells do at once, they should be evocation. The conjuration damage spells were orginally suppose to be DoT spells and the big one shotters were evocations. As for mage armor and abjurant champion...well since the example CLEARLY shows that mage armor is affected by the class ability, I think using a house rule that it works even though it is conjuration (which school it should REALLY be aside) is perfectly reasonable thing to do. I mean if CS, the sage or the guy who made the class itself says otherwise, I STILL don't care because that means they still FUBARED thing to hell one way or the other so they no longer have any opinions that matter anymore. |
| DarkRhystar01-28-07, 04:25 PM | non magical FORCE EFFECT?!? Gravity. |
| Nezkrul01-28-07, 05:04 PM | Gravity. more like Ranged Eye Gouge. :D |
| penchant01-29-07, 01:41 AM | Gravity. Orb of Gravity Pulse... now that sounds much cooler! |
| Cold Napalm01-29-07, 02:26 AM | Gravity. gravity is not a force effect or it would not make sense for it to work in ethereal plane at all. I mean honestly there is no way shape or form that making an orb of non magical force makes ANY sense. I mean sonic is pushing as it is. Not that a gravity spell like brago in zach bell wouldn't be cool...but that isn't force. |
