This +1 effect from Magic of Faerun absorbs one spell specified at creation. Does this work when the weapon is on the person but not wielded?

"The chosen spell must be one the is targeted against the wielder."

This sentence is actually referring to targeted spell vs. area spell, but I think the inference of referring to 'wielder' throughout the text is fairly clear. Then again... farther down the page is the Warning ability, and it seems to go the other way. The wielder basically gains Uncanny Dodge, so you have to have your weapon out to not be caught flat-footed? Hmm... maybe...

Sorry, that turned out to not be much help. :P

I shall join your quest for answers.

That is an interesting question. My instinct is to say only if held in your hand.

Hear is some of my reasoning: Look at the flaming abilities.

Flaming weapons when activated do not burn or harm the user or their items.

But what does that really mean. Are you a "user" if it is in your sheath? Or would you have to be holding the hilt? Well, if you stick the sword in someone you want them to take flaming damage. Therefore it seems obvious to me that merely touching the blade does not make you a user, you havbe to be holding the hilt. (Note this means a flaming sword in your sheath will burn your sheath if you let go of the hilt. Don't do that.)

I would expand on this idea to rule that the wielder/user of a sword is whoever is holding the hilt. Holding must be a firm grip that theoretically could be used to attack.

Therefore a Spell blade would only protect someone holding the hilt in a firm grip.

Note, to rule otherwise invites people to buy 20 spell blades and store them in you pack, claiming to be protected from 20 spells.
