Given that abrupt jaunt is an immediate action and can be "cast" even on an opponents go (unless the PC is flat-footed) can a PC avoid offensive spells such as magic missile or teleport out of an area effect in the small fraction of time between completing a spell and the spell hitting its target/target area?

ie can a PC time his teleport so that the NPC goes beyond a point of no return with its spell so the spell hits thin air (magic missiles thudding into the wall behind where the PC was just a milli-second ago!)

Or does this break down because the spells in question are invariably instantaneous? If this is the case can he use the ability to avoid ranged/thrown weapons (I'm sure they could as long as they were aware of the attack).

I'm guessing that the PC will need to interpret the spell being cast with a spellcraft check in order to teleport at exactly the right time to effectively avoid the spell without giving the NPC the chance to simply cast the spell at the PC's new location (if visible). This would require line of sight, a spot check and finally a spellcraft check.

I have the same question about combat - if an NPC strides over to the player in, say, half its movement allowance and takes a swipe with its sword, can the player time his teleport so that the NPC has effectively used up his attack slashing through thin air or will the NPC be able to use the rest of its allotted movement to stride over to another PC (or even possibly the same PC depending on where he teleported) and use its attack action?

This doesn't just apply to abrupt jaunt -could a PC raise an abrupt shield in response to seeing a clutch of magic missiles flying at him or would he have to know it was a magic missile spell (again through line of sight, spot and spellcraft checks).

ABRUPT JAUNT CAN BE AUSED TO AVOUID ATTACKS, YES. That is why there is no reason to specialize in any other school.

I pretty much assumed it was OK against melee and ranged/thrown weapon attacks - but against magic? It would need an amazing reaction time wouldn't it? Again this isn't just to get out of the way of something that might happen but to react to some magic missiles (or whatever) speeding towards you at an "instantaneous" speed.......

Well, it'll work against any spell that involve an attack roll, such as a ray, same as it would against weapon attacks. It'll work against AoE attacks if the jaunt is enough to get you out of the area, otherwise you'll get hit anyway. But a targeted spell... targeted spells (such as magic missile, hold person, and phantasmal killer) don't care where you are. Unless you manage to teleport behind cover (breaking line of effect) or out of range, both of which would prevent you from being targeted by the spell at all, I say it won't work.

Perfect - my next question was going to be "what about spells such as hold person where nothing physically flys at you?" - I think I'll use that. Cheers!

If you're still within range, I'd say you still get targeted.

Targeting decisions are made at the time of completion. So if you jaunt out of range or sight, the caster can simply decide to target somebody else.

Unless you manage to teleport behind cover (breaking line of effect)...
Don't you break line of effect simply be teleporting?
