| Thraxious06-14-04, 12:23 AM | Sorry to answer a question with a question... but why would think that you did not? |
| Moonstonedragon06-14-04, 12:25 AM | Yeah you would get dex if its the fly spell or your flying by your command. Now if your floating, falling, or somehow not in control while your in the air Id say no you dont |
| Thraxious06-14-04, 12:31 AM | I would agree that you keep your dex bonus while under the effects of the fly spell as well... But as to losing it for floating or falling? I believe you should still keep your dex bonus under that situation... for two reasons really. One, I am not aware of a rule stating that you lose it. Two, it makes sense to me that you should keep it. Reason being, you are still able to move around, the fact that you are floating does not prevent you from moving your body around, nor does the fact that you are falling prevent you from contorting out of the way of an attack... you do after all keep your dex bonus while charging ... even when upon a mount. As for not being 'in control' while in the air, I suppose it would depend on how out of control you were.. I think rules for being 'held or paralysed, etc' would most likely be used if you cannot move around at all. |
| Hairfoot06-14-04, 12:53 AM | I thought you might not because a character who is FLYing is not under their own propulsion, like a bird. They're being carried by a magical effect which moves them along at 60ft, regardless of their physical attributes. Without anything solid to brace against, a stationary character just hangs in the air like an armoured piniata. |
| Thraxious06-14-04, 01:02 AM | Well, the magical flight granted by the fly spell gives you "good" maneuverability, while lets you hover, move backwards, turn at any angle, etc... the spell description, and the effects of a "good" rating do not really support the idea of you hanging "in the air like an armoured piniata" :) At least no in my reading of it. From the impression in your post, I can see why you wonder about the dex bonus... but I cannot see anything in the rules or the spell description to support the notion that that is the way the spell is intended to work :) Unless I am missing a rule of course. |
| Hairfoot06-14-04, 01:14 AM | It discourages flying half orcs. Which is a good thing. |
| Edward06-14-04, 01:28 AM | What you forgot to consider is that there direction and speed of flight (up to the maximum 60’) is under the direct mental control of the recipient. You don’t take a step 1 foot to the left you simply want to be 1 foot to the left and you move. If anything it should give a bonus. Edward |
