| cwslyclgh02-17-04, 09:24 PM | welcome to the 43rd installment of Magic item of the week, as always I want to hear your comments. Wes :) Acid Dart: When thrown this well crafted black dart transforms into a glob of acid. A ranged touch attack is required to hit with an acid dart, and they have the same range increment as a standard dart. If the dart successfully strikes the target it deals 2d4 points of acid damage and continues to deal 2d4 points of acid damage on each of the subsequent two rounds unless the acid is somehow neutralized. The dart offers no bonus to hit and damage rolls and is destroyed when used. Moderate conjuration, Caster Level: 6th, Prerequisites: Craft Magical Arms and Armor, Melf’s Acid Arrow, Market Price: 600 gp, Weight: ½ lb. |
| Seeker9502-17-04, 09:45 PM | I like this. Although the description of the "dart" in the PHB as a small javelin, so closely placing the words dart and javelin together, makes me always want to call them jarts (aka lawn darts.) Would you use the same pricing structure to assign this ability to a batch of 50 shuriken? |
| cwslyclgh02-17-04, 10:34 PM | Would you use the same pricing structure to assign this ability to a batch of 50 shuriken? probably not, as a batch of 50 shuriken would be much more damagiing then a single dart... |
| cwslyclgh02-19-04, 03:29 PM | Any other comments or Suggestions? |
| Seeker9502-19-04, 04:03 PM | Face it. Every now and then you score a perfect 10 on the first try! |
| Vorpal Warhammer02-19-04, 04:07 PM | So, can you make iterative attacks with it, or is it a standard action to activate? It might be a bit overpowered if a Master Thrower with Rapid Shot can do 20d4 worth of acid damage with 10 ranged touch attacks, and then do another 20d4 for each of the next two rounds. |

I suppose you could throw multiple acid darts in a round if you had the quickdraw feat, just like any other dart. I designed it with the core rules in mind, not potentialy overpowered splat book PrC's.... but keep in mind that the Master Thrower in your example is burning through 6,000 gp a round using that tactic. I see it more as a problem with Palm throw then as a problem with my darts. |
| Vorpal Warhammer02-19-04, 04:52 PM | True, but a regular fighter with Rapid Shot could throw 5 of these in a round by 16th level. 10d4 of acid damage that requires ranged touch attacks and no SR (assuming it's modeled after Melf's) Would YOU speld 3,000gp at 16th level to inflict 30d4 acid damage with no save and no SR? I know I've had characters that would. A Javelin of Lightning costs more than double this price, allows a save for half, and wouldn't interrupt the concentration of a spellcaster for the following two rounds. You asked for feedback. I think it's a neat item, but there's a potential for abuse if you allow iterative attacks. |
| cwslyclgh02-19-04, 05:04 PM | of course a javalin of lightning doesn't run the risk of only doing 2d4 points of damage (if the acid is neutralized, such as by washing it off)... and the javalin of lightning can affect many opponents at one go (especialy if you throw it down a corridor, or into a collumn of enemies etc). I thank you for taking the time to comment, and I do apreciate them. Do not think that because I take the time to defend the way I made them that I am dimissing your ideas. |
