Adding a bonus spell [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-04-04, 02:23 PM Pretty much every magic item that has a spell effect (save for a few that have very specific descriptions) has a set spell level that is set when the item is made. I was wondering if anyone knows about pricing/creation information for a Wondrous Item that allows the user to cast a spell at his or her highest caster level. A bonus spell (like in a pearl of power) gives one extra spell to cast, but it can be any spell that the caster knows of the specified level.

I want to make a holy symbol that lets me cast summon monster or cure moderate wounds or something a few extra times per day but uses my caster level. It seems to me that such an item should be cheaper than a pearl of power that gives a spell of the same level (because a pearl lets you cast any spell), and would be subject to the 30% price reduction for a class-specific item. Did I miss something or is this simply not allowed?

Holy Symbol of Monster Summon 3:
Once per day the wielder may cast Monster Summon 3 as cast by a caster equal to the Divine spellcaster level of the weilder.

05-04-04, 02:55 PM Fundamentally such an item would effectively be a staff holding one spell with a charges/day limit rather than total charges. So, it's the same relation as a wand to a uses-per-day wonderous item. The wand-to-wonderous conversion for a spell-trigger item is just about (uses per day)/2.

So, price it as a staff, divide by 2, multiply by the number of times per day you want to be able to use it, and adjust if that's unreasonable for the particular spell. I would also require both Craft Staff and Craft Wonderous Item to be used in the creation process.

And the class discount is not appropriate. That is like saying I want a discount for a scroll of Magic Missile that only Wizards or Sorcerors could use.

P.S. Class and similar discounts are incredibally easy to abuse and are almost never appropriate to give out.
