| Dragoon_Warrior01-20-08, 03:56 AM | I've been brainstorming about adding the feature for players to aquire spell-like abilities when spending time in a specific area in my campaign. Now I at first just wanted to have it be part of just that hook and when they left said area they would loose these powers. My question is if I did let the players keep these powers how would I work the level adjustment for them and would this really screw the regular caster? The LA would depend on the spell lvl of the ability and times to use but what values? Also would this be crossing lines as far as messing with THEIR characters, you could look at it as a item that can't be taken away .... |
| M-bark01-20-08, 04:31 AM | There are some ECL calculators out there. For spell-like abilities, they tend to use this short little list: Spell-like abilities (Of all abilities on the list, this requires special judgement; if very powerful, add as much as 1 point.) Major powers, +1 · Any spell level over 4th, once or more per day · 10 spells/day · more than 3 spells at will Medium Powers, +.5 · At least one spell level 2 or 3. · 3-9 spells per day · Any spell over 1st level at will Minor Powers, +.2 · Anything else · Any 0th level powers not included in a "package" of spells above. Equivalence to casting spells/using psionic powers as a class: · +0.6 per level as cleric, bard, or druid · +0.8 per level as sorcerer, wizard, or psion I suppose you could use it. |
| RobbyPants01-20-08, 02:33 PM | I've been brainstorming about adding the feature for players to aquire spell-like abilities when spending time in a specific area in my campaign. Is it a magical area, or rather, are they acquiring said powers through exposure to magic? If so, the spelltouched feats (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/buildingCharacters/spelltouchedFeats.htm#spelltouchedFeatDe scriptions) in Unearthed Arcana might be a place to start. The idea of the feats is to give a PC some magical ability that they get from being exposed to magic. What you'd have to do is figure out how and when to give them out. Giving them as bonus feats (perhaps one every so many levels, to keep everyone on the same page) could work. Other than that, you could come up with something similar to what M-bark suggested. I don't think that I'd want to give out a spell-like ability of a level higher than 1st through 3rd. Even still, be careful to consider what the spell could do to the game, given how often you let it be used. A spell like Wraith Strike (2nd level, swift action, all attacks that round are touch attacks) could be pretty nice. However, if you allow it to be used too often, it becomes rediculous. I'd probably limit most of these abilties to once per day or once per encounter. Maybe they get stronger as the character gains levels, or the longer they stay in the area. |

| RobbyPants01-20-08, 09:28 PM | As I mentioned in that other thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=14877745#post14877745): Well, if everyone in the group gets them equally, then I wouldn't worry about it too much. Certainly, the more they get, the more powerful they'll become, but you can always adjust the difficultly of encounters based on that. Where it gets tricky is if one player is getting more or less than everyone else. To keep things simple, I'd just make sure each person in the party gets compensated equally. Keeps it simple and limits complaints. I think the same principle applies to bonus feats and spell-like abilities. If you keep it even, you should be fine. I guess the best way to keep it even is to allow them to make a choice. Still, you have to be careful to limit what's available. Do you have an idea of what you're thinking about doing? |
| Dragoon_Warrior01-21-08, 01:19 AM | Do you have an idea of what you're thinking about doing? Well I can't say too much about the specifics seeing how you robbypants would be one of my players but the idea is that there would be an island where a necromatic disaster has destroyed all life there and poisoned even the air with negative energy. When sent in to destroy the once wizard king now lich to keep him from doing this to the entire world you would have to fight your way through hordes of enhanced undead and taking damage from just being on the island at the same time. There would be some kind of positive energy fortification provided to the players to help them deal with all the negative energy that would be racking there bodies with pain and give them an advantage over the undead horde. An unexpected side effect would be these powers. I started thinking about this while watching my brother play a new game for the PS3 called Jericho. As the game progrested these warriors were traveling through this plane of death to destroy some ancient evil. You would switch between the character each having unique abilities of there own. And as the game went on they acquired magical abilities that suited there character individually. The powers given would at first be low level spell-like abilities and eventually they would gain more and more. I think when they leave the island once the quest is over that some of the powers would disapate with this blanket of death that shrouds the island but they would keep most of there powers. I would also have these powers complement the class of each character. |
| Prime3201-23-08, 01:51 PM | You could just give a player a level of warlock and call it an LA +1... (I use "..." too much) |
