A recent Zelda-related topic has led me to the idea of actually creating items for transformation purposes, each item only transforming you into a specific type of creature. I'd like for this to transform creatures into templated versions of themselves. Well, some of these items anyway. Others would transform you into actual creatures, etc. Of course, these would make for excellent cursed items. My question is, how do I go about handling this? Obviously, it'd require one of the various polymorph spells, perhaps even shapechange. Anyone have any ideas that might be able to help me?

As long as you make them specific templates per item, I think you could get away with using polymorph.
Just don't do any price reductions, since the spell doesn't normally allow templates.
You're just substituting a limitation for a greater benefit.

Let the polymorph Hit Die limit include the Level Adjustment the template would normally incur (if any). For templates with an LA of higher than that, you could do the same thing with polymorph any object[/i], although in that case, I would allow the price reduction for single-form-only restrictions.
