| Nagarhi05-01-04, 10:10 PM | I'd appreciate some advice on Costing the following magical item. I am not all that sure on the mechanics involved, so I have sorta just guestimated it..:) Boots of the North Wind: These soft grey leather boots increase the wearer’s base land speed by 40 feet. In addition to this striding ability (considered an enhancement bonus), these boots bestow upon the wearer enhanced agility. The wearer can jump and tumble with a +10 competence bonus, and receives a +2 insight bonus on reflex saves. Moderate Transmutation; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, expeditious retreat, creator must have 10 ranks in the Jump and Tumble skills; Price 44,500 gp; Weight 1 lb. Base Cost for each enchantment (from DMG 3.5) Movement: Spell level (1) x caster level (7) x 4,000 = 28,000 Jump +10 = 10,000 Tumble +10 = 10,000 Reflex +2 = 8,000 All and any advice appreciated. Thanks. |

The ring bestows resistance to cold 10 upon its wearer and allows her to activate the following abilities with the appropriate command words; invisibility (at will), message (at will), disguise self (3/day), displacement (2/day), and dimension door (1/day). Moderate illusion: CL 7th; Forge Ring, disguise self, dimension door, displacement, invisibility, message, resist energy; Price 93,500 gp; Weight -. |

I assume you're getting th CL 7 from the ten ranks in Jump/Tumble, correct? If so, there are two things wrong with this. One, the two are incongruous. Without Cosmopolitan, you're not going to have a CL of 7 and 10 ranks in Jump/Tumble...unless you're a bard, in which case you don't have access to longstrider. Two, the skill bonuses have no effect on CL. You can't treat them as CL equivalent for many reasons, but the first to spring to my mind is different skill sets for different classes. An item created that gave a bonus to Knowledge (history) would be twice as expensive for a sorcerer to create as it would be for a wizard to create. If there's some totally obvious reason that I'm missing, please tell me. |
| Thraxious05-02-04, 04:56 PM | Hmm, wouldn't the additional powers added to the item cost more then their base pricing? Since it is a slottable item...? "Base Cost for each enchantment (from DMG 3.5) Movement: Spell level (1) x caster level (7) x 4,000 = 28,000 Jump +10 = 10,000 Tumble +10 = 10,000 Reflex +2 = 8,000" Wouldn't it be... Movement =28000 Jump +10 = 15000 Tumble +10 = 15000 reflex +2 12000 Total = 70,000 The most expensive part, the movement, at its base pricing, the other different abilities at 50% more then their base pricing? I personally think that all should be ok for body slot affinity.. so no more pricing on that though... Am I missing something? Or maybe I misread..? |
| Enaloindir08-09-04, 11:45 AM | I would base the cost of your boots on the Boots of Striding and Springing. First, we'll have to reverse engineer: Boots of Striding and Springing: +10' movement, +5 jump, 5500 gp. The +5 competence bonus would cost 2500 gp (5*5*100). Now, we can try to find the cost of the movement boost. Using the rule that the lower-cost ability has its cost increased by a factor 1.5 when adding multiple abilities to an item, we have two options: a) the skill bonus is the cheaper ability: This would mean that the skill bonus is counted as 3750 gp worth in this item, leaving 1750 gp for the movement. b) the movement boost is the cheaper ability If the movement is the cheaper ability, this would mean that the movement's modified cost would be 3000 gp, or that the base cost would be 2000 gp. Assuming the "normal" bonus squared x constant cost evolution, the second assumption seems more valid*. We'll work with that one (it's simple to find that the constant in the pricing formula is equal to 20)**. So: +2 to Reflex saves = 8,000 gp (as per DMG) +10 to tumble checks = 10,000 gp (as per DMG) +10 to jump skill = 10,000 gp (as per DMG) 40' speed increase = 32,000 gp (40*40*20 gp) 32,000 + 1.5*8,000 + 1.5*10,000 + 1.5*10,000 = 74,000 gp total worth. That's how I would price it... Enaloindir *: when you compare this approach to the DMG's guideline for making a continuous expeditious retreat item: DMG: 1 (caster level) * 1 (spell level) * 2,000 * 2 (duration in minute/level) = 4,000 gp Formula: 30*30*20 = 18,000 gp A "balance" check reveals that the formula gives a better pricing, given that the +30' increase in movement is quite a boost, certainly worth more than a mere 4,000 gp... By treating movement bonuses seperately from continuous expeditious retreat, you also bring these boots more in line with Boots of Speed. **: if you would like numbers similar to those in the DMG in order of magnitude, just assume the bonus to be (movement increase/10'), and the constant becomes a nice 2,000. The final pricing would then be bonus * bonus * 2,000. |
