| HappyDragon05-24-05, 10:16 PM | I am currently playing a Ranger that has just gotten spells and an animal companion. Now I know Druid's are by far the best at buffing their friends but I do not want to take any levels of Druid, but would like to stay with Ranger all the way. I can't find many spells that would help a Ranger aid their Companion so I offer this Spell out to those of you much better learned on these type of things than I.... Cure Light Wounds, Animal Companion Same in all respects to Cure Light wounds except is a Rgr 1 spell and can only target the Animal Companion of the Ranger casting the spell. I know, I know.....not the most inventive of spells but I've never tried this and I thought I'd see what other people thoughts are if it would fit in alright... Couple ways to modify it I have thought of include ... -Not having to be touching the Companion, but within say a 30 ft radius with at least line of sight -If the above spell intrudes a bit too much on Druid or Paladin's territory, something along the lines that the 1D8+1/level is actually taken from the caster and given to the Companion This may also be all moot as I am now rememberiing something about Animal Companions being able to share spell effects of the Ranger.... ...Either way. Please help me out and any other suggestions for some interesting passive spells to create for Companions would be greatly appreciated. :) BTW I do have all the current 3.5 books with Ranger spells but I'm wondering if there are any good homebrew ones out there? Thanks again :) |
| Bloodtide_the_Red05-24-05, 10:34 PM | You did know that Rangers do get the Cure spells right? Starting with cure light wounds at second level. And you can cast the cure spells on animal companions. All 3.5 books? That's a lot of books. BT |
| HappyDragon05-25-05, 12:13 AM | Heh, yeah, unfortunately I didn't put the pieces together till I was just finishing the post :embarrass Still learning all the mechanical things to the game. My thinking on it was to have a first level spell that would just help the Companion. Otherwise it's a long way to 8th level when I finally get access to those 2nd level spells. There's sparce other spells scattered through the books that would benefit a Fourth level Ranger to aid their Companion.......there are some nice ones, don't get me wrong.....The Traveller's Mount from Complete Divine is a good example of that, but there has got to be more a ranger can do to help their Companion at lower levels :) |

| Jaid05-25-05, 01:05 AM | just buy a wand of CLW. you can use it on yourself, your teammates, and your animal companion freely. it's reasonably cheap, and certainly worth the cost IMO. remember, for wands you only have to have it on your spell list. you do not have to be able to cast it or even any spells (uhhh.... your modifier may need to be high enough though, not sure), you just need to have the spell on your list. thus, even a level 1 ranger could use a wand of CLW. |
| HappyDragon05-25-05, 01:13 AM | I made it a first level Ranger only spell because the other Classes who get Animal Companions/Mounts get Cure Light wounds as a first level spell, (Druid and Paladin). Rangers do not see that spell till 8th Level. I do like your idea for the ranged Cure Companion though, (by the way a much better name than what I had going, kudos :) ).....It could work nicely at higher levels. Any other suggestions will be appreciated. |

| Neely05-25-05, 02:58 AM | Hi, perhaps you should take a minute and read page36 of your PHB. An animal companion gets the "share spell" ability at level one. This one lets you share every spell you cast on yourself with your companion. For your animal companion; keep him in range of 5ft for 1 round, cast cure wounds on yourself and both benefit from the spell. It even gets better. You may cast any spell--even the ones you may only cast on yourself--on your companion with a ranged touch attack. |
| Scifione05-25-05, 08:27 AM | This is more on par with the power level and effectiveness of spells in the PHB 3.5. It is important to note that these spells effect magical beast, so they will effect animal companions, familiars, special mounts, and most creatures summoned by the summon natures ally spells. This will make you very popular in some parties. Can you say, "Be healed my animal friends"? Cure Light Animal Wounds Conjuration (Healing) Level: Druid 1, Rgr 1 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Touch Target: Animal or magical beast touched Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Will half (harmless); Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless); When laying your hand upon an animal or magical beast, you channel positive energy that cures 1d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +5). This spell has no effect on undead if targeted. Cure Moderate Animal Wounds Conjuration (Healing) Level: Druid 2, Rgr 2 This spell functions like Cure Light Animal Wounds, except that it cures 2d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +10). Cure Serious Animal Wounds Conjuration (Healing) Level: Druid 3, Rgr 3 This spell functions like Cure Light Animal Wounds, except that it cures 3d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +15). Cure Critical Animal Wounds Conjuration (Healing) Level: Druid 3, Rgr 3 This spell functions like Cure Light Animal Wounds, except that it cures 4d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +20). Cure Light Animal Wounds, Reaching Conjuration (Healing) Level: Druid 3, Rgr 3 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Effect: ray of positive energy Target: Animal or magical beast Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Will half (harmless); Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless); You channel a ray of positive energy to heal an animal or magical beast, when doing so you channel positive energy that cures 1d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +10). Cure Light Animal Wounds, Mass Conjuration (Healing) Level: Druid 4, Rgr 4 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target: one animal or magical beast/level, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Will half (harmless); Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless); You channel positive energy to cure 1d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +25) to selected animal or magical beast. Heal Animal Comapion Conjuration (Healing) Level: Druid 4, Rgr 3 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Touch Target: Your animal companion touched Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless); Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless); This spell functions likeheal, but it affects only the animal companion of the caster. |
| HappyDragon05-25-05, 03:38 PM | It may be redundant to have Druids have access to these spells as they already get the Cure Wounds spell progression starting at their first level. I do however like the mechanics you got set up and the addition of the Healing spell targeting the Animal Companion is a nice touch......Though I may change it to a 4 level Ranger spell simply because the Paladin gets Heal Mount as a third level spell......Then again, now that I think about it I see where you're coming from on making it a 3rd level spell. I'll show the ideas to my DM and let hims have the final say on which mechanics will be the best. Thanks to everyone that has posted as they all have helped me understand this whole Animal Companion business much better  I'll try to come up with some more spells that may be appropriate for Ranger Animal Companions. Will hopefully be posting again soon :) BTW does anybody out there have some good homebrew spells for a ranger's animal companions that may be able to expand my spell list? Thanks in advance :) |
