| Chrismith02-06-08, 04:58 PM | I need some advice on good Paladin spells to prepare. I have two 1st-level and two 2nd-level slots to fill. Right now I'm preparing the following each day: Rhino's Rush (with the PHBII Charging Smite variant) Divine Sacrifice Smite of Sacred Fire (FoW) Free slot (just leveled) I use Rhino's Rush and Smite of Sacred Fire fairly often, but I think I've only used Divine Sacrifice once. I've been thinking about replacing it with Devastating Smite (also from FoW). I don't really have any ideas about what to put in my free 2nd-level slot. I'd like to have spells that increase my damage output, and if they can be cast as a swift action that'd be a bonus. What do you suggest? Edit: Ooh, I just came across Bladebane from Unapproachable East. Kind of expensive at 500gp a pop, but it might make a good backup spell -- plus it's guaranteed to work against any creature, not just evil ones. |

The auto-crit is very nice, especially if using a weapon with a good crit range (swords, scimitars, rapiers, etc..). While it won't help when using a keen weapon, it will work with the Improved Crit feat. (Greatsword wielding paladin with Imp Crit greatsword auto critting on 17-20 is pretty nice...) Some of my favorite paladin spells: Earth Hammer from Races of Stone. 3rd level, swift action to cast. Turns your weapon into an adamantine, bludgeoning weapon. Also increases the base damage by one step. Very useful for sundering objects and weapons. Knights Move from Spell Compendium. 2nd lvl swift action. Teleport yourself into a flank. One of the very few ways a paladin can do any teleportation magic. Good way to 'close' with an enemy, especially since most paladins are burdened with heavy armor and aren't usually the most mobile characters; plus you could still take a full attack since you don't have to use a move action to get into position. Works best with a friendly rogue ;) Find the Gap from Spell Compendium. 3rd lvl First attack each round is resolved as a touch attack. The uses for this should be obvious. |
