In an upcomming campaign I will be playing a bard. I have a hard time, however, picking some of my spells known. I still have 1st level slot to fill, and I have already decided it will be a enchantment spell. I am not sure which one to pick, however. The spells I am considering are:

- Sleep (we use the 3.0 version)
- Hideous Laughter
- Confusion, lesser

Please tell me which one of these spells you would pick. For me, they all have roughly the same purpose and each one seems to have its own benefits and downsides. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Always Tasha's hideous laughter. There's nothing more funny then that.

Clearly Hideous Laughter. If the victim fails their save, they're as good as dead. So it's like a lower level version of slay living, really. You just have to kill them while they're incapacitated laughing.

In our campaign, a level 4 troupe killed an 18 HD vrock without sustaining a single hit. Needless to say, the DM was less than comfortable with that. And it could've eaten us all if it wasn't for Hideous Laughter and a bad save on the hand of the Vrock.

Besides, everyone and their mom is immune to Sleep, and Confusion doesn't last long enough to be of any use.

Always Tasha's hideous laughter. There's nothing more funny then that. I completely agree.

The Vrock must have rolled REALLY poorly. It had a +10 will save, and an additional +4 to it's save for not being of your same type, and it's only a second level spell (making the normal DC 10 +2 = 12). So assuming you had a +5 bonus to your primary casting ability, and assume also another +3 DC from feats (like spell focus) or items or something (which is assuming a lot in your favor), and the spell still had a DC of only 20. Meaning the Vrock had to roll a 5 or less to fail. More likely you didn't have such big DC boosts, in which case it probably had to roll a 3 or less.

In other words, you got really really lucky!

Yeh, it donged. That's what we call rolling a natural 1. Usually it entails some horrible and embarassing form of failure. Such as being killed by something 14 ECLs lower than you. Damn our DM for only allowing us to gain a single level from that encounter. >.<

Tasha's Hideous Laughter. I'm not leaping on the bandwagon, I'm speaking from experience.

We had an encounter with a BUNCH (80 hd worth) of undead, and I would have been QUITE helpful being a Cleric if it wasn't for a monster than the DM had pulled from a non-wiz supplement: Jolly Roger. Jolly Roger had a Tasha's Hideos Laughter spell-like ability that disabled half the party. If it wasn't for the crazy flying sorcerer throwing fireballs all over the place, and the fact that the Crew helped us fight (80 HD, but they could only do half as much as the undead damage-wise), we would have lost BIG TIME. Still, it was the way the DM presented it:

DM: Suddenly, another skeleton pirate in red robes swings over to your ship, faces you, and says "Argh, mateys!" Give me a will save.

(We all giggle at the cheesy presentation, but we have no idea that this is what the DM was going for until I fail my save miserably, as does the ranger nearby)

DM: You suddenly find this situation horrendously funny. You burst out laughing so hard that you fall to the ground.

Another player: Tasha's hideous laughter...

Me: How long does it last?

DM: Seven rounds.

Me: (IC) Ha ha! They're killing us and I get +4 AC against ranged attacks! Ha!

Mercifully, Jolly Roger was killed before he had a chance to grab me (I was a Kobold) and throw me overboard, still laughing insanely. Soon the battle was over. However, the effect of the laughter hadn't worn off yet.

Captain: Now what's so darn funny, eh?

Super Lame Saying Attack!: You can also call it "Rictusempra"...
