| Rubberchrist06-25-04, 07:56 PM | in the PHB page 175, it reads... cone: "shoots away from you in a quarter circle in the direction you designate. it starts from any corner of your square and widens out as it goes" i read this to mean you can begin the point of your cone (specifically a diagonal cone) from any of the four corners of your area, and fire it any direction you choose. even if it means targeting yourself with the effect (though that is a little silly). others i game with have argued that you choose your corner and it expands outward in the direction from your center. period, no exceptions. just curious as to how you guys out there read this. replys? |

| Xeviat-DM06-25-04, 11:07 PM | The cone can be aimed in any direction starting from you. You could aim a cone straight up if you wanted to, though the times when you'd want to do that aren't very many. For purposes of the battle grid, it's easier to start on corners and follow the templates, but most DMs are reasonable enough to allow you to aim it at directions other than increments of 45 degrees. |
| Rubberchrist06-26-04, 02:55 AM | what the intention was was to cast a cone aimed diagonally northeast from myself starting from the northwest corner, the rules lawyers that i play with dont like that. |
| Xeviat-DM06-26-04, 08:56 AM | Nope, you can't do that, they're right. You must specifically aim the cone away from you, starting from any corner. That doesn't mean any direction from any corner, but that means you may choose any corner and then aim the spell away from you from that corner. If you really want to start the spell from that particular intersection in that particular direction, five foot step diagonally to a square which would allow you to cast from that intersection (which means five foot step west). |

| The Spoon06-26-04, 01:23 PM | Not sure what kind of character you're using, but I would suggest buying an ear of corn at the farmer's market and stuffing a portion of the cob into your stub. Although you do leave yourself open to attack from random crows and magpies, your character should be able to perform normally. |
