| Egres04-12-05, 10:07 AM | Here we go with another of Skip's mistakes: You can apply any metamagic feat the cleric knows to a spontaneous spell. To do so, you must use a spell slot of the spell's modified level. For example, a maximized spontaneous cure light wounds spell requires a 4th-level spell slot. Casting a spontaneous spell modified with metamagic is a full-round action if the modified spell had a casting time of 1 standard action or less. If the modified spell has a casting time longer than 1 standard action, the modified spell takes an extra full-round action to cast (see page 88 in the Player's Handbook). Because of the minimum casting time of a full-round action, it's a waste to try to quicken a spontaneous spell. It's not a waste. You can't do it. From the SRD: QUICKEN SPELL [METAMAGIC] Benefit: Casting a quickened spell is a free action. You can perform another action, even casting another spell, in the same round as you cast a quickened spell. You may cast only one quickened spell per round. A spell whose casting time is more than 1 full round action cannot be quickened. A quickened spell uses up a spell slot four levels higher than the spell’s actual level. Casting a quickened spell doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. Special: This feat can’t be applied to any spell cast spontaneously (including sorcerer spells, bard spells, and cleric or druid spells cast spontaneously), since applying a metamagic feat to a spontaneously cast spell automatically increases the casting time to a full-round action. |
| tarkin04-12-05, 10:23 AM | Let me get this straight. You are so virulently anti-Skip that you are upset because he said something in-effective when the books state it can't be done? You need to calm down kid. People make mistakes. This was about as innocent a mistake as it was possible to make. In fact, YOU made a mistake in your post. You wrote 4 lines. The first one was gramatically incorrect (You should have written "here is another Skip mistake", or "another of Skip's mistakes" - what you wrote is wrong.) Stop complaining about irrelevant things that Skip does and start trying to do it right yourself. |
| Beamup04-12-05, 10:29 AM | Nothing incorrect at all with what he wrote. There is NO mistake or error there. PHB: "Spontaneous casting is a full-round action so it cannot be quickened." Skip: "Spontaneous casting is a full-round action so it's pointless to try to quicken it." Totally, 100%, absolutely consistent. He's simply (apparently) assuming that we're aware you can't quicken a spontaneous spell because it's automatically a full-round action. It can't be quickened, therefore it's a waste to try and quicken it. If he said "you gain no advantage from quickening it" then, yes, by the strictest possible reading that would be incorrect. But he didn't. He said it's pointless even to try. Just to illustrate, consider this expansion of what he wrote: "Because of the minimum casting time of a full-round action, it's a waste to try to quicken a spontaneous spell, since due to the minimum casting time, spontaneous spells cannot in fact be quickened." What he's saying is exactly what the PHB states, he's just not explaining the details! |
| Egres04-12-05, 11:04 AM | Let me get this straight. You are so virulently anti-Skip that you are upset because he said something in-effective when the books state it can't be done? Nope. I'm not anti-Skip (I don't know him personally, and I don't care about him more or less than you do.) I'm only underlining "another of Skip's mistakes".( as you suggest.;)) You, on the other hand, seem to be an uber-Skip-defender, always citing the Sage, and sometimes making mistakes with him. Calm down tarkin: we all are here to debate about rules. If you don't like to see your little god making mistakes don't read his articles and avoid my threads where I show them. Ah, just one more thing: he gets paid for his articles, while I don't get anything to correct them. Think about it. You need to calm down kid. People make mistakes. This was about as innocent a mistake as it was possible to make. In fact, YOU made a mistake in your post. You wrote 4 lines. The first one was gramatically incorrect (You should have written "here is another Skip mistake", or "another of Skip's mistakes" - what you wrote is wrong.) Except that English isn't my first language, and my work doesn't have anything that involves your language.(that could help me refreshing my English) However, thank you for your correction. Unlike you, I appreciate when someone corrects me. It helps me improve myself. Stop complaining about irrelevant things that Skip does and start trying to do it right yourself. Actyually, my work doesn't allow any kind of errors, and I have never made errors in my work so far. Skip's article is his work. Draw your conclusion. Totally, 100%, absolutely consistent. He's simply (apparently) assuming that we're aware you can't quicken a spontaneous spell because it's automatically a full-round action. It can't be quickened, therefore it's a waste to try and quicken it Mmh? Tell me Beamup: would it be a waste to try to fly with your car for you? Or you simply can't fly with your car?(unless you are some kind of Matt Trekker:)) If Skip underlines that it would be a waste he implies that you can, but it wouldn't be a great idea. Don't try to twist his words in order to help him. Making an error isn't a crime. These articles can be helpful for newbie players, and I'm only helping them, trying to highlight a case of bad wording, if you prefer. |
| Thorak04-12-05, 12:53 PM | My 2 copper; It's a typo or a poor choice of words. Skip is saying it's a waste when it's in fact not possible. The wording under Quicken Spell says it's impossible because of the change in casting time. In theory, you could do it, but you won't get any benefit out of it. It can't be applied because of the casting time change. That's it. And that's all Skip's really saying; that it's a waste, which is the same reason as in the PHB. As much as I rag on Skip's wordings and rulings in some occasions, this one doesn't seem to be significant in any way. |
