Allies as Spell Target [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-27-08, 05:21 PM Hi, can you help me find some definition of allies and as it refers to yourself when casting a spell? My DM has hesitated on granting my cleric the benefit of some spells when it says allies without it specifically mentioning self. I think because some spells specifically mention 'including yourself' he takes it as a condition that it doesn't always. There are some spells like Recitation (where even the "fluff" mentions self) where he isn't sure, and I am closing in on Righteous Wrath of the Faithful.

I have seen some posts that pretty much says "allies include self because bardic music tells us so" but even the bardic music has times where it does and does not affect self. Has there ever been a simply stated rule that states "Unless otherwise noted, allies includes (or does not include) yourself" ?

P.S. Along with "allies", is there a similar ruling on 'follower of your deity' like recitation and faith healing affecting self?

02-27-08, 06:31 PM "Follower of your deity" is simple, you just see which god they have written on their character sheet :P

If you check the Glossary in the back of the PHB, or on the main website http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/glossary you will find this definition for "Ally"

ally
A creature friendly to you. In most cases, references to "allies" include yourself.

Spells that target allies automatically can include the caster unless specified otherwise.

And by the way, if you have a spell which would work better for followers of your own religion, that is basically an invitation for some good ole' RP conversion attempts.

"You appreciate Pelor's love for you? You would appreciate it much more if you dedicated your life to His service! Repent your false gods and worship the sun god, and he shall grace you with 2 points more healing per spell (on average -- results may vary based on Pelor's mood)!"
