I recently stated an air genasi character, and I was wondering about how I would use alter self. Can I turn into outsiders with 5HD or less, or only into other native outsiders? Or is is something else completely? Thanks in advance for the help I'm sure to receive.

edit never mind, I figured it out

And what was your answer?

You may turn into any Outsider with 5 or fewer hit dice. The sub-type doesn't matter (Native is a subtype).

That's what I would have concluded, but figured it had to be more complicated than that!

that was my conclusion as well. I based it off the recent Sage article on the main page.

Of course, basing it off the recent Sage article on the main page, you might conclude that you can Alter Self into a humanoid, not another outsider.

Since they're an exception.

For no good reason.

Or anything written anywhere in the rules.

(Or wait, am I thinking of familiars?)

no, you can change into things of your type. Air Genasi are outsiders, so they can change into outsiders, but not into humanoids.

Yes, I know.

And familiars are considered magical beasts for the purpose of any effect dependent on type.

OK. We must be on two different pages. I thought you were saying an air genasi could alter self into a humaniod. My mistake.

I did, but I was being scathing and sarcastic at the time, so it doesn't count :)

So you weren't mistaken about what I said, but it wasn't really what I meant :)

OK. We must be on two different pages. Close. Hypersmurf thinks this is a different thread. The whetstone for grinding his axe must have dulled over there. :P
