Quick question; Would a Half-Dragon be able to use the 2nd lvl spell Alter Self to turn himself into a HD appropriate Dragon (assuming size issues are resolved)? The RAW state You assume the form of a creature of the same type as your normal form. The new form must be within one size category of your normal size. The maximum HD of an assumed form is equal to your caster level, to a maximum of 5 HD at 5th level. You can change into a member of your own kind or even into yourself.

thats how it works, however it doubt they had half-dragons in mind when they created the spell.

That's exactly how it works. Now it's time to make your list of up to 5HD, S/M/L [dragon] creatures!

Ick, who in their right mind would want to be a green dragon, the goofiest looking freaks to ever heave their gangly bodies into the realm of fantasy?

Of course, if you're playing a squat race (gnome and halfling) as your base, that opens up the possiblities to a black and brass dragon wyrmlings (Tiny size, 4HD), white dragon wyrmling (Tiny size, 3HD) and the copper dragon wyrmling (Tiny size, 5HD).

Ok, flip side of the original question;

Would that self-same Half-Dragon be capable of assuming Human or Humanoid forms (assuming Human as the base race for the Half-Dragon)?

there was a thread on this board not long ago about this where I posted all a list of all of the appropriate HD/Size creatures of the dragon type I could find (based upon a medium sized caster)

Wyrd Bearer has a good point about small half-dragons having more oprions, however WB is wrong about drwarves, short as they may be they are medium sized creatures.

Blast! :ahem:
Hm.
How bizarre that a humanoid creature with Draconic blood cannot assume another Humanoid form.
:thinks:

I suppose I could Houserule a variant....base it sorta off the Human Heritage idea in Races of Destiny.

Hm

HmYep, that's the breaks. Although if you hold your breath long enough, there may be a dragon type who looks almost human in the upcoming Races of (the?) Dragon. Not sure if the dragonblooded look human enough or if they do, if they count at dragons.

However, if you're worried about causing a riot by walking into town when all the peasants run screaming from your scaly form, I suggest using Disguise Self to help you make a disguise to appear humanoid while wearing lots of bulky clothing.

How bizarre that a humanoid creature with Draconic blood cannot assume another Humanoid formalthough they are called Half-Dragons (and may indeed have one dragon and one humaniod parent), a half-dragon is realy more dragon then humaniod, if you want something that is more humaniod then dragon try the draconic template from the Draconomicon :)
