| The Livewire12-04-05, 02:07 PM | Good afternoon, I encountered this in my search for character concepts. By the RAW, a planetouched can assume the form of a lantern archon. some questions... I assume the altered planetouched can fly, yes? I also assume that he cannot use the light rays. Can he cast spells? Speak? Use Bardic Music? Does he lose the native subtype? If yes, this means that underwater is good for this, since outsiders don't need to breathe/eat/sleep. Any other 'make the DM's head hurt' outsiders that are under 5 HD? |

Yes, you can fly because the fly listed isn't supernatural like Beholder's. (if you turn into a Beholder you can't move more than 10 feet since their fly is supernatural) http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=176246 You can't use Light ray because it is extraordinary special attack which alter self forbids. You keep your subtype. It says: Your creature type and subtype (if any) remain the same regardless of your new form. You could speak/Bardic Music that requires non-instruments like singing, poetry, etc. |
| Sarlax12-04-05, 03:29 PM | A beholder's flight is extraordinary, not supernatural. The lantern archon is capable of speech, so you may continue using abilities that depend on vocalization. Lacking appendages, however, there's no realistic way for the lantern archon to use spells which have somatic components. A somatic component is a measured and precise movement of the hand. You must have at least one hand free to provide a somatic component. Now, it's fair to read "hand" as "a manipulating appendage," in the quoted text, but lanterns specifically lack any physical specialization, so they shouldn't be able to cast somatic spells. |
