| Asteryx12-07-05, 01:42 PM | Can I use Alter Self to transform into an eagle? Rules say" take the form of a creature of the same type". Otherwise, which humanoid has wings so my wizard can fly on the cheap? |
| Wyrd Bearer12-07-05, 01:56 PM | This (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=176246) is a useful thread that I've found will answer every alter self question that arises, especially the "what forms can I take" ones. Going with core rules only, no, there are no forms for the standard races to assume a flying form with alter self. Going outside of core, there are a race of winged elves from the Forgotten Realms setting that you can take on as a form for flight. As for your example of becoming an eagle, no, because an eagle's type is Animal while your normal races that you'll play are all Humanoids. If you want to become an eagle, you'll need either polymorph or to be a druid. |
| JL371212-07-05, 02:46 PM | I think theres Avariels (winged elves) and than there's Raptorans for the races of the wild book. though I'm not sure if they're humanoids or monstrous humanoids, than there is the winged template from the Savage Species book applied to a human or halfling. Also aren't kobolds humanoids with the reptilian subtype, if so than there is their cousins the Urds, who are supposedly winged kobolds. Just a thought. |

| Moosh Nailo12-07-05, 08:58 PM | Raptorans from Races of the Wild. They can fly when they reach 5HD, glide until then, and have a +10 to jump checks. |
| Rhaevyn40412-07-05, 10:14 PM | In core there isn't anything you could transform into to enable flight if you are a humaniod. The best thing to do is simply use a fly spell, only one level higher than alter self. |
| Emeramber12-08-05, 12:08 AM | I've gotten some flight mileage with Altering into an air mephling, from the planar handbook. While it doesn't have the avariel's speed, it does have its uses. An air mephling is a small humanoid with 10 (Perfect) flight. If you need burrow for some reason, the earth mephling has burrow 10. |
| Wilds12-08-05, 01:00 AM | alter self into a human and get a floating feat :D |
| Asteryx12-08-05, 01:09 AM | Doesn't allowing Alter Self (Wiz2, 40 min, Personal) to Avariel or Air mephling put Fly (Wiz3, 4 min, any 1 creature touched) somewhat out of balance? Also where is the Urd described? WoTC has a pict of it with a kobold but it's not in the MM nor MM3. Surveying a goblin camp as a Urd would attract less attention than as an Avariel. |
| ronyon12-08-05, 07:59 AM | There are Flying monkeys in StormWrack :D |
