Alternat magic item creation system.

Every feat you spend on item creation gets you 3 sub feats.

There are 3 broad groupings of sub feats. Benefit, activation and duration

Benefits include.
Weapons abilities
Armour abilities
Spell effect
Skill boosts
Physical abilities (stat boost, natural armour SR
Sundery benefits (things like rods that have no formula)

Activation includes
Use activated
Command word activated
Spell trigger
Spell completion

Duration includes
Always on
Daily charges (includes infinite)
50 charges
single use.

Another sub feat is needed to put multiple abilities in one item

A wizard starts with spell completion, spell effect, single use as a free feat (this is effectively scribe scroll.

What items you can create depends on your sub feats. For example. A crystal ball is effectively spell completion. Daily charges (unlimited) sell effect. A necklace of fire balls is use activated spell effect swingle use multiple abilities. Gauntlets of oger power are use activated, always on, Physical abilities.

Some sub feet combinations don’t make mush sense. EG spell completion, Physical abilities

I would like general comments as well as a min caster level for each sub feat. And if you think there are any I missed.

The costs of magic items would be unchanged. Effectively you would design the magic item and then list the sub feats required to make it.

This is a first draft open for comment. I assume it still has gaping holes. Feal free to point them out to me but do so calmly

It seems too complicated at first glance. It seems like it would require far too much understanding to use effectively, with none of the system being presentable in "nuggets" of information.

It appears as if a new player would not be able to use any of it until she understood all of it.

If, instead of multiple column menu driven, you could present it in a level progression format? For example, rather than having Item Creation be a series of Feats you might choose to take, it becomes a Caster Level ability that you get simply by being a caster.

Example:
CL1: Scrolls (single use, spell completion)
CL2: Potions (single use, spell trigger)
CL4: Wands (charged, spell completion)

etc.

The point is not the choices I put in each CL, but rather the format... if it is going to have a different approach than current, the approach should be easier.

I will admit. I was not going for easier.

I wanted to get away from the problem of I can create this item as a bracelet but not as a ring. Or craft wonderus being so much better than craft rod. The fact there is no way to make spell trigger items other than wands and staves (potions are use activated). The fact that if you have craft staff and not craft wand your 50-charge spell trigger item of CLW is 5’ long (if you can even make it) all your suggestion dose is make item creation feats free.

I don’t under stand. You want to make it simpler. In the last line of my second post I addressed that I hadn’t been aiming for simpler. I wanted to get away from the way items where categorised.

You say. “if it is going to have a different approach than current, the approach should be easier” I disagree. I was going for a more fluid system. If this would not suite your game then you should not use it. I don’t know wether it will sute my game when it is finished but I am going to finish developing it before I decide wether the finished product is to complicated.

2 axes: level of peramance and activation type.

Level of permanace includes 1-use (1), charged (2), and permanent (3).

Activation type includes spell trigger (1), spell completion (2), command word (3), and use activated or continuous (4).

Use of each entry requires the expenditure of a feat.

There is also a minimum level to be able to perform that type of enchantment. That minimum level is the product of the 2 axes. So to create a 1-use spell trigger item (i.e. a scroll) requires a minimum level of 1. To create a permanent continuous effect item requires level 12.

Nagol, I like it!!! And for the linear thinkers in the world, it could be presented in a level progression chart, but an axial reference would be easier.

The current system has a lot of overlap in what can be constructed. Need a protection item? Build a ring! or a cloak, or a brooch, or maybe put it into the shield...

This gets rid of the overlap between construction feats. The alternate systems needs to be fleshed out and proofed.
