| The_WhiteRabbit03-30-06, 03:23 AM | Has anyone made any up? For either humaniods in different campaign settings, or an expanded table including more humanoid types, or for other types (Monsterous Humanoids, Dragons, Native Outsiders, Magical Beasts, Animals, Giants etc, etc). What if you reincarnate something with a subtype? Is there an increased chance it will have that subtype (there isn't based on the current table, in which there are a few humanoids with the reptilian subtype), or if not do you think there should be for some subtypes (shapechanger, for example--what about a native lycanthrope vs an infected one?). And finally, if a character is reincarnated into a form with an ECL, do you make them somehow pay it? I certainly don't think they should, but that is something that should be factored into any new tables made--but should giants have different reincarnate tables based on their ECL, or should a troll and a half-giant have the same odds of being reincarnated into the same type of giant? |
| Seeker9503-30-06, 10:04 AM | Folks have asked for tables off and on since 3.5 standardized the table to humanoids. But despite all the questions, nobody has yet shared any table they created when they realized there aren't any yet. So... If you make your own table, share it with us and let us critique it. |
| tarkin03-30-06, 10:54 AM | Why shouldn't someone have to pay for a ECL? You just want to give it to them for free? I could see giving them a free +1 level, considering they lost a level. But really, giving them say Drow, or that +3 Gnome? And you want to offer higher level ones. If they get something like say Astral Deva, are you REALLY going to give them a free +8 levels? There are 4 ways to deal with these problems: Anything Goes: 1) Ignore it and let them have the huge bonus. Power: 2) Let them keep the bonus now, but they can't take character levels untill they pay for enough XP to have purchased those ECL's. Loose: 3) Have them lose character levels enough so that their total level remains the same. Loose: 4) Give them the new race, but not all the powers. Use the 'immature' variant rules where they start out as with only a very few of the powers, and as they take 'levels' in the race, they gain all the powers. Strict: 5) Don't let them take races with > +1 ECL |
| mvincent03-30-06, 11:51 AM | I made a table for someone that wanted to reincarnate a riding dog. Since the humanoid reincarnation table is this: 01: Bugbear 02-13: Dwarf 14-25: Elf 26: Gnoll 27-38: Gnome 39-42: Goblin 43-52: Half-elf 53-62: Half-orc 63-74: Halfling 75-89: Human 90-93: Kobold 94: Lizardfolk 95-98: Orc 99: Troglodyte 100: Other I made this (using entries from the Monster Manual of animals that were of similar size and CR): 01: Bear, Black 02-13: Pony, War 14-25: Baboon 26: Hyena 27-38: Badger 39-42: Dire Rat 43-52: Leopard 53-62: Wolf 63-74: Small dog 75-89: Dog, Riding 90-93: Snake, small Viper 94: Crocodile 95-98: Boar 99: Lizard, Monitor 100: Other Yes, I had fun making comparisons ;) |

Strict: 5) Don't let them take races with > +1 ECL Changing races can cause all sorts of problems, even if you do luck out and end up turning from a half-elf (for example) into a bugbear. I wasn't going to offer "higher level ones" -- I was looking for different tables for, say someone who was playing a tiefling or half-giant that got reincarnated. The tiefling should reincarnate as a native outsider, and the half-giant should reincarnate as a giant. I didn't say there should be a chance for a tiefling to reincarnate as an astral deva or planetar. I also didn't say the half giant should have a chance to reincarnate as a troll (but maybe as an ogre, though I wouldn't grant them the ogre's base HD). I was asking people for their opinions on the matter. I'd probably make up tables similar to the existing one (by the way, mvincent, I LOVE your table for reincarnating a riding dog, and I enjoyed the comparisons it implies). And while I'd love to see someone reincarnate a native outsider, I wouldn't put any outsiders on the table that were unable to be reincarnated--so only native outsiders. The fact that you don't have to pay for the ECL is covered by the fact that reincarnate carries its own penalties. If a character had to pay for the ECL, the rules would say so somewhere--sure, a DM is well within his rights to do so, but I'd certainly lose interest in playing a character if I had to make up several levels of ECL in the process. Additionally, if the new form has hit dice, I wouldn't give them. The player would just stay at whatever character level he had been and have those hit dice. I also wouldn't take away any earned bonus skill points (or even the bonus feat) from a human, but I wouldn't let them continue to get that bonus skill point. It'd be a ***** for anyone who had taken a racial prestige class, but then that's part of the penalty of reincarnate. You lose your race, even if it had been central to your character's identity. Sure, from a min/maxing point of view, reincarnate can be a big boost, and maybe even worth the lost level. But you're going to have all sorts of RPing problems. What happens if you roll into town looking like a Bugbear? How many towns aren't going to think you're there to raid the village? Sure, half-orcs suffer this same problem, but to a much lesser degree. But imagine if a native lycanthrope or a changling were to be reincarnated--what table would you use? Would you use the normal one, and make 00 be another shapechanger? Would you just have them be screwed out of their special abilities that come from being a shape-changer? Would you roll twice, once for base type and once for the shapechanging subtype? Or what if someone is playing a sub-race? If a forest gnome rolls a result of gnome, should they come back as a forest gnome, or just a regular gnome? I'm curious, because my current character is a Sorcerer who is planning to become a Wild Mage, and is maxing out UMD (not to mention has an 18 CHA and 2 feats that give him a +2 to it)--I'm tempted try to get a scroll of reincarnate as a "just in case" kind of measure. As a 4th level spell, it's easier to use with the UMD skill. Not to mention it's MUCH less expensive (1k + scroll cost vs 5k + scroll cost) And as a Wild Mage to be, it's the sort of spell my character would like. However, one of our party members is an Elan--which is an abberation. If he gets dropped, I'd be interested to see what kind of reincarnation tables the DM would come up with. I actually think I'm going to suggest to the DM that I'm trying to find a reincarnate scroll whenever I might have the opportunity. Though that might make him (the DM) MORE likely to let somebody die. Which brings up another interesting, related question: Would you let a Wild Mage with the student of chaos ability (student of chaos allows a wild mage to roll twice and pick between the two results when he uses a magic item that offeres a randomly determined effect) roll twice when using a scroll or wand of reincarnate? I certainly would--it's exactly the sort of thing the ability is meant for, even if reincarnate may not have been a spell the designers had been specifically considering (but any wild mage is going to be good at using a magical device). I like this idea--I think I'm going to start thinking about some alternate reincarnate tables. If I get anything solid, I'll post them here. (Edited to fix typos) |
| mvincent03-30-06, 06:12 PM | Well, for those that are into such things, let's start making submissions for reincarnation tables. Put them here and I'll record them for future posterity (or more likely; combine the best parts of each submission in a category if there are several). We'll try to stick with core/SRD, but don't be afraid to make suggestions. Here are some categories: (lists of these can be easily made using the Monster filter (http://www.d20srd.org/filters/monster.php)) - Humanoid (already covered by RAW) - Animal: low CR (Done: see above) - Animal: higher CR - Native outsider (Done: see below) - Aberration - Dragon - Fey (Done: see below) - Giant (Done: see below) - Magical Beast (Done: see below) - Monstrous Humanoid (Done: see below) - Ooze (not needed) - Plant - Vermin (not needed) (Not allowed: Constructs, elementals, outsiders, and undead) Who's game? |
| mvincent03-30-06, 06:25 PM | Here is the promised table for Monstrous Humanoids (balanced against an average LA of 2) 1-20 Centaur 21-37 Derro 38-39 Doppelganger 40 Gargoyle 41-58 Grimlock 59-62 Harpy 63-81 Minotaur 82 Sea Hag 83-100 Other Edit: Sahuagin removed (aquatic) |
| mvincent03-30-06, 07:20 PM | Here is a table for Native outsiders (still suitable for PC's, since they all have LA's. The percentages were balanced against an average LA of +1. Those reincarnated as regular outsiders will not be able to be reincarnated again): 01: Triton 02-25: Planetouched, Aasimar 26: Azer 27-28: Mephit, Air 29-30: Mephit, Dust 31-32: Mephit, Earth 33-34: Mephit, Fire 35-36: Mephit, Ice 37-38: Mephit, Magma 39-40: Mephit, Ooze 41-42: Mephit, Salt 43-44: Mephit, Steam 45-46: Mephit, Water 47-50: Dwarf 51-55: Elf 56-58: Gnome 59-61: Half-elf 62-64: Half-orc 65-67: Halfling 68-74: Human 75-93: Planetouched, Tiefling 94: Dretch 95: Janni 96- 100: Other |
| Seeker9503-30-06, 08:09 PM | Just a note regarding vermin. For those vermin that are animals, I would place them in the animal table, rather than a separate one. The Monster Manual lsits vermin as a separate category mostly for purposes of allowing swarm and other [type] benefits. Not as a claim that they are not animals. |
| The_WhiteRabbit03-31-06, 03:50 AM | Here is a shot at Giants--it's tough, because there just AREN'T that many giants that don't have a tremendous LA (often due to being some variety of troll and having fast healing). Best I could come up with is a table optimized for a LA of 2 (it was that or have everyone reincarnate as a half-giant). I also kept it to giants with a maximum size of large. 01: Half-Troll Kobold 02-20: Ogre 21-59: Half Giant 60: Frost Giant 61: Fire Giant 62: Hill Giant 63: Stone Giant 64-95: Half Ogre 96-100: Other If you want to stick to things that are in the core, replace half giant and half ogre with ogre, and half-troll kobold with other. Abberations are going to be diffiicult--looking through the MM 1-3 and FF, the lowest LA is +3 (excluding purely aquatic creatures) and most are significantly higher than that. If a character is playing an Elan and gets reincarnated, a DM is going to have some tough choices to make. |
| The_WhiteRabbit03-31-06, 05:40 AM | Another thought: Aquatic types shouldn't be mixed with non-aquatic types. mvincent: I like the work you've done so far, but I may modify some of the talbles to include non MM creatures. If I do, I'll post my ideas. |
| Seeker9503-31-06, 09:19 AM | it's tough, because there just AREN'T that many giants that don't have a tremendous LAThis isn't a problem. To use the giant reincarnation table, you would have to be a giant to begin with. And that usually involves some kind of LA already. Zero-sum gain. |
| The_WhiteRabbit03-31-06, 01:17 PM | This isn't a problem. To use the giant reincarnation table, you would have to be a giant to begin with. And that usually involves some kind of LA already. Zero-sum gain. Right, but because I find most PCs (at least in the games I play in) try to minimize their ECL, I imagine most will be either a half giant or half ogre, so I wanted to keep the ECL for the table as low as possible. And I guess TECHNICALLY the half-troll kobold has a LA of 5, but I figure the kobold half will severely limit a lot of the half-troll advantages (particularly the ability bonuses). Plus, it just sounds like fun and I've always had a soft spot for kobolds. |
| mvincent03-31-06, 01:58 PM | Another thought: Aquatic types shouldn't be mixed with non-aquatic types.Good call. I didn't notice the Sahuagin's dependancy on water. It's removed. Luckily the Sea hag and Triton aren't dependant on water though. |
| Seeker9503-31-06, 02:38 PM | I imagine most will be either a half giant or half ogre, so I wanted to keep the ECL for the table as low as possible. If they are going to use a reincarnation table, let them. If they become a much bigger giant, make sure to enforce the difficulties such a form presents: size matters. |
| mvincent03-31-06, 08:52 PM | Reincarnation table for Fey (balanced against an average LA of +3) 01-12: Dryad 13-20: Nymph 21-30: Satyr 31-34: Wood elf 35-37: Gnome 38-53: Sprite, Grig 54-69: Sprite, Nixie 70-89: Sprite, Pixie 90-95: Wild Elf 96-100: Other |
| The_WhiteRabbit04-03-06, 11:03 PM | I think I'm just going to have to accept that the Abberation table is going to have a high ECL. I'll put some thought into it in the next couple of days and see what I can come up with. Also, if you have access to it, I'd make the gnome in the fey table a forest gnome. But that's really just for flavor. :) |
| MadRaccoon04-04-06, 01:34 AM | just an idea... Maybe add some modifiers to what kind of creature you become based upon alignment (read: karma). Maybe a neutral humanoid comes back as a humanoid, but a lawful good humanoid can come back as an angel and a chaotic evil humanoid can come back as a devil. Of course, this does add a bit of eastern philosophy of reincarnation... Haven't flushed out the idea, but it could be fun to do something... |
| The_WhiteRabbit04-22-06, 09:42 AM | I haven't done the abberation table--our Elan PC got killed so it's no longer an immediate concern. In the meantime, here's a nice living constructs table: Roll 1d12 (because the d12 needs more use) 1: Warforged Charger 2-8: Warforged 9-12: Warforged Scout http://boards1.wizards.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
| Brave Sir Bevier07-04-06, 12:50 PM | Ah....here's the thread. I was wondering if anyone posted about this. It doesn't look like anyone added this link, but I think it is just what you guys are looking for: http://www.rpghoard.com/data/Reincarnate_list.pdf |
| valvorik07-04-06, 01:03 PM | My Reincarnate spell notes: Reincarnation works within a creature type. The PHB table reflects a humanoid’s reincarnation. For other types of creatures, a different table is used. Results that give an ECL higher than the reincarnated creature can have are re-rolled. If a creature has an “always” alignment type different from the character’s, the result is re-rolled 80% of the time (if not rerolled, the reincarnated creature retains its alignment and is atypical for its type). In all cases an “Other” result means using a different table.
