I don't like the fact that a wizard must drop 2 whole schools of magic to specialize. It doesn't seem to make that much sense. "I'm really good with necromancy, but I had to stop studying evocation and enchantment completely to become so." I can see being worse with some schools-- or all other schools even-- in exchange for more mastery of one, or having to devote a certain amount of spell slots or something to your specialist school, maybe, but the current system doesn't sit well with me. If the point of dropping schools is game balance, I'd be much happier dumping it and seeking balance elsewhere (such as my wiz/sor MM-role swap). I imagine others have noticed this problem and devised ways to fix it, so I'd like you to post them here. If you're uncertain how balanced your ideas are, post them anyways, and this thread can double as a workshop to develop them more. Thanks. |

I do like some of the varients introduced in the Unearthed Arcana to add flavor to the specialists (that was yoinked for my campiagn the minute I saw them). After reading your post, it reminded me of something we came up with in the Wheel of Time. In that game you used feats to choose schools of magic. We came up with a feat that allowed you to gain two schools of magic but not be able to cast spells over 4th level (to better reflect the actual novels spellcasters, who were weak in areas but could still cast). Anyways to tie back in that segway, couldn't you just limit the spell caster from using 5th level and higher spells from 2 (or even 3) schools of magic. Maybe just give the player a choice to ban one school entirely or limit 2 schools. |
