I'm thinking of making my next character a ninja/wizard or ninja/wu-jen and i was thinking about utilising the alternative spellbook options on page 187 of complete arcana (bit hard to imagine a ninja lugging around a spellbook, maybe some kind of oriental-style scroll)
My question is thus; how many spellbook pages could a dagger or shortsword contain? what skill would be required to scribe these 'pages' craft(weaponsmithing)? craft (metalworking)?
also are there any other pieces of equipment that a ninja could scribe spells to?

I would say:

A dagger is 1 page (front and backside) (like handcrossbow)
A shord sword is 4 pages (like arm bone)
Longsword 7 pages ( bit more than a leg bone)

I don't think, that you need a skill for that. You dont need it for Tatooing and not for special materials for spellbooks (p. 140)

But I think you have to pay the cost of the hard metal foil, to make your sword writable!

Being your character also a ninja (one kind of warrior) i see it more likely for the spellbook to be one special scroll, like those carrying your school/dojoīs arts and teachings (techniques) and meditate and/or study from it each morning as part of his usual martial preparation.. Could be a tad more expensive but you could make it one special scroll with either Srink or a extradimensional space (like bag of holding) to store itīs īmany pagesī while remaining only slightly lager and heavier...

Another path i see is more fitting a īmonkī, meaning a sacred one (whatever is equivalent to clerics and druids on OA): Special Praying Beads (or some other foccus appropriate to the character concept) with each bead storing a spell (or mayhaps 4 pages). Enhanced with an invisible form of ilusion to form the runes around the wearer; and a limited detect magic so the wearer can īseeī the floating runes... Will seem, to others, the person is praying or meditating.. or foccusing his chi. And if done as a jewel or some way to seem impoertant, itīll still seem to be the casterīs source of power (like a spell book).. Good for flavour...

Just my :twocents: worth of words.. hope itīs of some use.

Where did you get that a hand crossbow was one page?
on page 187 is says scribing a spell on a token takes 24 hours +8 hours per spell level and the spellcaster must succeed on an appropriate craft check (woodworking, gemcutting or similar) with DC 10+spell level. I think craft(weaponsmithing). Do you recon the ninja could get someone else to inscribe the sword if he oversaw the crafting (much like with the buildings as spellbooks idea.

Sorry - hand crossbow bolt was what I wanted to say -thats on the same page like the bones

spellcaster must succeed on an appropriate craft check (woodworking, cemcutting or similar)

Sorry, I have not seen that.... I think metalworking is better. With weapon smithing you make a weapons, with metalworking you change the appearance (I don't know a better English expression for that, sorry)
And you quoted Craft [Woodworking] - I think, you prefer Weapon smithing, because you can create more Weapons (= Spellbooks) with it. But I think thats not ok, because with craft Woodworking you cannot make bows.

But take care! If you have got a sadistic DM, he surely will send you a Rustmonster!
