Nowadays, two DMs (so far) just let wizards gain all the spells automatically when they reach a required level. How many people play like that? It seems more fun to find spells, but then again you're at the DM's mercy for what new spells you might stumble upon. How much easier is the "gain all spells you qualify for automatically" way? |

Think of the cost of all those books they have to put spells in. Agg. I think that the 2 free per level is all that is needed. Finding more is not only fun and flavorful, but a nice balancing mechanic that should have been used for the cleric and druid as well. The DM should be able to limit the spells one can come across. If you want to circumvent that, do research. I know there are spells that raise my eye brow. This isn't to say that a DM should be a mean tyrant about the spells he lets in, but having a certain amount of control is really good. Make it a quest to find this one particularly sought after spell. It can be an adventuring hook. This control can be especially important considering that the Wizard is generally placed in the top three most powerful classes to date. |
