Some of you may remember the original Vox Fri -- a spell that nailed your foe's psyche to the floor and required smashing stuff to get them out.

This new version seeks to further replace Hold Person, removing the inexplicably stupid 'save every round' mechanic with a way out that *seems* easy.

Vox Fri
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]
Brd 1, Clr 1, Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S, F/DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One humanoid creature
Duration: 1 round/level (D); see text
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes
You throw an iron pin through your target’s shadow. A failed save means that the target’s shadow has been pinned in place and the target is paralyzed.

This spell does not function in total darkness or in light brighter than daylight. A daylight spell cast on an object in the same square as the target instantly ends the spell. Removing the pin, which requires a full round action that provokes and attack of opportunity and a Strength check DC 16 also ends the spell immediately.

Material Component: A six inch long iron pin worth 1sp, destroyed when the spell ends.

One Problem is you require someone else to save you.

One on one: if you fail save: it is over for you.
With hold person you can save yourself *eventually*.

Very interesting spell: I've seen this idea in animes before.

Both hold person and this allow Coups.

I'd say it is balanced. I do ask why it is mind affecting...don't undead have shadows?

Exactly.

Once more -- exactly. If you get held, you need saving. That's the point of holding you. Not so you can get instantly break free next round.

Shadow Snap from Slayers to be precise.

Both hold person and this allow Coups.
But Hold requires it thanks to its moronic save structure.

I'd say it is balanced. I do ask why it is mind affecting...don't undead have shadows?
I just wrote everything else on top of the original Vox Fri, which pinned the targets mind, not thier shadow.

Thanks for your comments :)

Seems too strong to be a level one or two spell to me. I'd put it at brd 2, clr 2, sor/wiz 3, or maybe even higher. It's at least as good as hold person.

But it's way cooler than hold person :D

May I suggest changing the school to 'Illusion (Shadow)'? Pinning a person with his shadow seems pretty shadowy. I love this spell.

This spell is nice. (I'm not a fan of hold person - in fact, I don't like it)

And I would say bard 2 cleric 2 sor/wiz 2.

I like the spell, but I think the level is too low. This spell is definitely better than hold person, and hold person is 3rd level. It's way underpowered for its level, yes, but this spell isn't underpowered, so.... I say Brd 2, Clr 2, Sor/Wiz 3.

The spell is nifty, but the level is a bit low. Although it has the limitation of not working in darkness or exceptionally bright light, it's essentially a save-or-die effect. Should something that powerful really be available as a first-level spell?

Sounds like the "Shadow Snap" from Slayers. :D

Why is it a level lower than hold person if it's supposed to be an alternative? If anything this seems better than hold in almost every way. I can see making it a level 2 wiz/sor spell and maybe a level 1 bard spell, but a level 1 cleric spell?! Since when do clerics need more help?
