An "Illusory Messenger"- do I have it right? [Archive] - Wizards Community

So. I want to do something with a spell, or group of spells, but I'm not sure if there's the right spells to make it work.

What I want to do is have one npc, who's not a spellcaster, be sitting at a campfire in the wilderness. The PCs come up, he offers them some food, and even tends to the cooking rabbit. The PCs probably end up fighting him, and as one of them attacks him, he dissolves into shadow - he was just an illusion!

The way I see it, he might have been talking with Ventriloquism, and using an Unseen Servant with the commant "mimic the illusion's motions" to move stuff... but not sure what I should use that they're actually seeing. Minor Image?

And is there a way to do it without 10th level PCs being able to (easily) detect that it's illusory? I guess with him, it's not Interacted With until he gets hit, but Ventriloquism seems like it'd give it away, they "interact" with it until they hit it.

This'd be really easy if he was a Warlock, heh. Hold Action on Flee The Scene, but ... alas.

I guess, this is two spells from his illusionist ally, and one from a potion. Surely there's a better spell?

Or, if I wanted to make a single dual-school spell, a walking, talking, sound-making illusion masking an unseen-servant-like thing, whose sound originates from it (hence, not illusory?) ... what level would that be?

Persistent Image, Illusion (Figment)
Level: Brd 5, Sor/Wiz 5

Is close... Technically, the rabbit would also have to be a separate illusion. But some DM's allow it to create a 'scene' instead a single creature/image. Or you could have him check on the rabbit, but not actually move it.

To interact with the illusion you don't need combat. My rule of thumb is any standard action examining the illusion gives a save. Out of combat conversation would probably allow for a save, but how long into the conversation it would be would be up to you.
